In romance novels, soap operas and comic books, we cheer for the hero who saves the life of a person or city through magnificent powers. But who are the real heroes in life? I think real heroes are people who are selfless and who make others’ lives better. A grandmother who raises her grandchildren due to the parents’ death or imprisonment is a true hero. A police officer who returns a lost child home to his/her parents is a hero. Heroes don’t need magical abilities or a huge cape to fly from buildings; they just need a compassionate heart seeking to do God’s will and impact lives wherever they go. I volunteer at a local radio station for the blind where I read books and newspapers over the air. I may not be considered a real hero by the world’s standards but in God’s eyes He’s pleased with me.

Suppose you’re thinking, “How can I be a hero? I’m just an ordinary person who delivers food to the elderly during the week.” No, you’re not just an ordinary person. Did you know that the people who receive the food may consider you a hero? We need to get rid of the Superman mentality and see ourselves as servants of God who meet the needs of hurting people. We may not be pastors, choir directors, or ushers, but each of us can change a life. The next time you see a person discussing his/her hardships while waiting for the bus, be a good listener and minister to them through your encouragement. That person may consider coming to Christ one day.

I put together a list of people who God would consider heroes but not necessarily the world. Be encouraged and continue being His hero!

1. The garbage collector who picks up our trash
2. The mother who imparts God’s wisdom to her children
3. The classmate who befriends an unpopular student
4. The aunt or uncle who brings his/her niece/nephew to the movies
5. The guidance counselor who helps students pick the right colleges
6. The husband who has integrity and provides for the family
7. The boss who encourages his employees and challenges them
8. The doctor who serves his patients well
