The Israelites and the Philistines were set for battle. But the Israelites were hesitant. The Philistines had a giant by the name of Goliath. Goliath taunted the Israelites every morning and evening for forty days. He wanted the Israelites to pick one man to do battle with him to the death. The loser’s people would become slaves to the winner’s country. King Saul and his men were burdened with fear. Not one man stepped forward.
David appeared at the camp with food for his brothers and to inquire how they were doing in the battle. David’s brother, Eliab, became angry and snapped at David. Asking why did he came? Eliab accused him of being conceited and having a wicked heart.
Have there been times in your life when someone asked you to do something and later you were accused of doing it out of pride? I was asked to pray for someone which I did and a week later a member of the family accused me of praying out of ego.
Saul sent for David and David told him not to fear because he would go and fight the giant. Saul objected telling David he was only a young man and Goliath was a battle experienced warrior. If confronted with a statement like this, remember what Paul wrote to Timothy. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
David told King Saul of his past victories against the lion and bear. He assured the king he would do the same to the Philistine.
Saul dressed David in his own battle gear. David rejected it because of its restrictions. David used what was familiar to him. He grabbed his staff, some stones and his sling.
The two combatants approached each other. David told Goliath that his weapons were no match against him, because he had the name of the Almighty God on his side. This was the Lord’s battle, and all the Philistines would fall into the hands of the Israelites.
David did not wait for Goliath to come to him. He ran toward the battle line to meet Goliath. He reached into his bag and pulled out a stone and loaded his sling and with the snap of his wrist the stone darted toward its target. The stone landed in the middle of Goliath’s forehead. A perfect strike. The giant fell face down on the ground. Dead.
When the Philistines saw Goliath dead, they turned and ran. The Israeli army surged after them to the entrance of Gath and to the gates of Ekron.
How do we face our giants? Do we ignore them, hoping they go away, or let them taunt us? David ran toward his problem. He knew victory was in God’s hands.
Defeat was not in David’s vocabulary. David knew he could not out muscle Goliath. He had something much bigger and stronger than Goliath and his weapons. He had Almighty God on his side. The Israeli army focused on Goliath while David focused on God. Do we allow our giants to flood our thoughts?
David had self-confidence, yet he knew it would only take him so far. What he had in his heart was God-confidence. The more the Israeli army focused on Goliath the larger he grew and the more frightened they became. It is the same with our challenges. The more we focus on them the bigger they get and God gets pushed out of the way.
Let go by surrendering all to our Almighty God. Let God is having faith in His promises and staying out of the way. He does not need our help.
The battle is His. All the glory to God!
