Rex drove to the hospital to see Ashlynn, who had been attacked and beaten badly. It never crossed his mind that her sexual preference had anything to do with the attack. Upon arriving at her room and showing ID to the officer standing outside, Rex reached out to comfort his crying sister.
“What happened?” asked Rex, hoping to get a motive that Diamond could use to track the creeps.
Ashlynn answered between sobs, “I was just kissing Kelly as she was going into her apartment, when these two guys said 'What a waste of a hot chick!’ I tried to ignore them, but they grabbed me and tried to kiss me. When I refused, they started punching and kicking me.”
Rex responded, “You told the cops, right?”
That sent Ashlynn into a fresh storm of tears. Rex thought, ‘I’d never do this to anyone else, but I’m telepathic. Maybe I can get the description of the two punks from her mind.’
To any observer it looked like he was placing his hand on her face to wipe away the tears. Rummaging through her thoughts sickened him, but he pressed on until he found her memories of the attack, a couple of heavily tattooed skinheads.
Aloud he said, “I’m sure those punks will get what’s coming to them.”
As he stormed out of the room, he literally ran into his team leader, Megawatt, who asked, “How is your sister?”
Rex snarled, “She’s beat up real bad, an’ Imma goin’ ta put the fear o’ God into them scumbags!”
Megawatt knew his friend was upset by the way he lapsed into street talk. He murmured, “You know who they are? I spoke to the police and they said she hasn’t given them a description.”
Rex snapped, “I do, an’ don’t be askin’ questions, Sparky.”
Megawatt knew better than to fight Rex. In his Diamond form he could bench press a car one handed. Instead he contacted the only other Light Force member who could keep up with Rex’s strength and asked her to discreetly follow him. Speaking to Rex, he said, “Go, but remember you represent Christ. Don’t do anything that would damage His name.”
Rex muttered his reply so Megawatt didn’t hear it.
About thirty minutes later, a large superhuman presence barreled into a bar where the assailants were reportedly hanging out. He roared, “I’m only here for th’ two losers who beat up a woman earlier. Don’t care about the rest of ya!”
Stomping through the bar, he found the two attackers trying hard to not look in his direction. Walking up behind them, Diamond grabbed them by their arms and flew out of the bar. About two hundred feet up one of them screamed, “We didn’t do nothin’. Let us go!”
Diamond, whose temper was already at the snapping point, calmly asked in a low voice, “You sure?”
When the two nodded yes, Diamond shrugged and said, “You need to think about what you said.” Then he let go. Flying downward, he grabbed them before they could hit the street.
As soon as they realized they weren’t going to die, the second one said, “Why you doing this? You a Christian, right? We beat up a lesbian, so what?’’
Diamond snapped, “As a Christian, I love the sinner, but hate the sin, tough guy. Anything else you wanna say before I drop youse again?’
At their pleading, Diamond mocked, “Where are the tough guys who beat a girl so bad she’s got three busted ribs, a snapped kneecap and more bruises than you mental midgets could count?”
The first one begged, “OK, just take us to the cops.”
Diamond snarled, “Sure, but if you don’t confess, I’ll be back to play with you more.”
Seeing the fear on their faces, Diamond flew them to a nearby patrol car and knocked on the window. He said to the officers, “They say confession is good for the soul. I’d listen to these two, especially on the hate crime of beating up a lesbian.”
Seeing the shaking thugs placed in the patrol car, Amazing Woman walked up to him saying, “I’m glad I didn’t have to intervene. Feel better?”
Diamond said, “Yes and no. It’s real disturbing how close I came to snapping their necks.”
