She intended to repurpose a device used to treat schizophrenia in her native time, hoping to defeat the “Christian terrorists.” The device separated alternate personalities to treat the illness. With a slight adjustment, she planned on using a portable version to confuse the ‘heroes’ identities. She smiled to herself as she recalled reading the Bible her foes believed in to confuse them like the myth of the tower of Babel.
Driving to the area where the heroes would get an award, she’d have plenty of time to set it up. Upon arrival, she saw most of the young people milling around the stage, waiting for their leader and the Congressman who was giving the award to arrive. Angela had the device hidden inside a camera shell, and took a moment to tighten its rays’ focus.
Ten minutes later, Megawatt landed by the rest of the group and Congressman Harvey stepped out of his limo.
With a single blast she would confuse the heroes and make them easy prey for Allah’s Fist. Angela enjoyed the irony of using one religious group to destroy another. She fired a blast at the Light Force as the Congressman proclaimed how much they had kept the community safe. She thought, ‘If you only knew how much they would affect your future, my present.’
On stage, the Light Force members staggered as they felt the psychical effects of the ray . Diamond found his voice and quietly spoke to Megawatt, “Boss, I feel … strange, and why am I in Blue Flame’s body?”
Megawatt responded, “I think I know what you mean. For the first time in years I can see, and I’m doing it with Megawatt’s eyes.”
Blue Flame’s face shone with surprise, “Coldfire? Are you in your husband's head?”
Congressman Harvey noticed the hushed conversation and interrupted himself, “Is something wrong?”
Megawatt’s voice answered with the confidence of years of dealing with strange things in Coldfire’s career. “Just a feeling of vertigo, Congressman.”
Telepathically, Coldfire reached out to the entire team and discovered that they were all affected. Just as she finished the head count, Allah’s Fist appeared and Lion Lord shouted, “Our friend said you wouldn't be feeling your normal selves. Pity, I would rather prove Allah’s superiority when you are at your best, but I’ll take my victories where I can!”
The Light Force, hampered by the body swap, struggled to get, in some cases, very unfamiliar bodies to respond. Mariness and Coldfire used unfamiliar powers to defend against Lion Lord as did their teammates against the remainder of Allah’s Fist. Coldfire caught a stray thought from Diamond, ‘In this body I can hit these women.’
It took a little more time than usual to defeat the Islamic supervillains, but eventually the last one fell when Megawatt, who had experience with energy based powers, took out Moonhunter.
Coldfire, using Megawatt’s voice, excused the group to deal with their `vertigo`. Soon the seven brightly colored figures arrived at the rear entrance of All Good and Perfect Things where their mentor was working. After a brief wait, Ruth Sexton spoke to the group, “We’ll run a few tests to get your minds back to where they belong.”
The computer from the thirty-ninth century scanned the seven heroes and reported that they had been subjected to a mental illness correction wave. ‘Diamond’, protested, “There’s nothing wrong with our heads, except that we’re in the wrong bodies!”
Ruth spoke in a calming tone, “I did say I’ll need to run a couple of tests. That was only the first one.”
As Ruth was preparing for the next scan, the heroes staggered like they did previously and Diamond said, “I’m back to normal. How about the rest of you?”
The remainder of the team sounded off that they were back in their own bodies, with Coldfire bitterly, saying, "Back to being blind again.”
Ruth responded, “I did say you were hit with a mental illness correction beam. I’ve read about this cure. It usually requires several doses for the effect to become permanent.”
Megawatt, relieved to be in his own body again, asked, “Whoever did this likely thought Allah’s Fist would defeat us, so they rushed the treatment, right?”
Ruth nodded in agreement and the heroes departed to recuperate.
