My heart beat with excited anticipation as the huge jet accelerated down the runway. My destination was halfway around the world. For a year I would experience living as a minority, eating a different diet, and trying to communicate in a language not my own. And, I would be living among those who do not embrace Christianity.

My earliest memories were of going to church. At an early age I accepted Jesus as my Savior. I spent many hours attending Sunday School, Vacation Bible Schools, and Church Camp. What would it be like to interact with those who do not think like I do? Would I have to rethink some of my long-held beliefs?

That year I observed and interacted with people who practiced Buddhism and/or Animism. While many were careful to adhere to following the rules and observing their religious holidays, I detected a lack of peace; most, seeming to just be going through the motions, trying to cover their bases.

Often, grain or animals, needed to feed their families, was instead sacrificed to appease animistic gods. A common practice was to leave food offerings on little altars near their homes and businesses, as well as in cemeteries. I became aware of several examples where individuals or groups were receptive to accepting Christ. However, they wanted to hang on to their long-held beliefs as well.

According to Scripture, the earliest mandates handed down from God Himself admonishes us to not worship idols or other gods in addition to Him. Throughout the Old Testament the Israelites were warned that they must serve the Lord God only. Jesus reinforced this in Matthew 4:10 (NIV) when He rebuked satan in the Wilderness, “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’” In addition, the Apostle Paul reminded the Romans that God’s wrath fell on mankind because “they worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator…” (Romans 1:25 NIV)

One occasion during that year abroad stands out in my memory. Several members from a neighboring Hill Tribe came to the annual session for Christian Leaders. One couple wanted to be baptized in water to show their commitment to following Christ. During the ceremony one of the leaders was careful to explain that this couple was following Jesus only. They had willingly allowed their home to be searched to prove there were no hidden idols or amulets they were depending on. They were declaring that Jesus was all they needed.

I feel that I returned from this cultural experience stronger in my faith and commitment. I am grateful for the peace and hope I have in Jesus Christ. He is truly all I need!

I would encourage you to examine your own life. Are you mixing any of your own ideas with what Christ taught? Are you entertaining any idols? You probably aren’t bowing before created objects, but what about your entertainment, sports, relationships? Be careful that the Lord God remains first and foremost in your life.
