Rex grunted into the phone, “Stupid liberal judges.” A pause and then, “Sure I’ll tell her.”
When he hung up, Rebecca asked, “What did Dirk want?”
After forking another bite, Rex answered, “Remember the super crook your sister named Evilabeth?” Rebecca nodded and he continued, “She got released from prison today, because some soft in the head judge decided that keeping her in a special cell so she couldn’t use her powers was 'cruel and unusual punishment.' Moron!”
Rebecca recalled Evilabeth's first crime spree and asked, “I guess Megawatt wants no all male teams to deal with her.”
Rex nodded as Mariness’s phone alerted her to a text from Dirk with the new patrol schedules.
The next couple of nights went by without a sign of Elizabeth Carlson. On the afternoon of the third day, it was announced that a press conference would be given by Elizabeth's attorney, Carter Winston. In attendance were, discreetly, Coldfire and Blue Flame. Also in her secret identity, the Speedster was there.
Winston gestured grandly as he spoke. “My client, Elizabeth Carlson, was convicted because she has gifts that the court didn’t understand, and she was convicted by the unreliable testimony of some local vigilantes. Why in their first report, they gave wildly different descriptions of a supervillain.” Waving her forward, he commented sneeringly, “One said she was blond, and the other said she had black hair. As any fool can see, my client has auburn hair.”
Coldfire angrily recalled that Diamond and Megawatt had described Evilabeth as similar to her and Mariness. Her feelings must have been visible on her face, because Blue Flame cautioned, “He’s not worth it.”
Meanwhile, Carlson had started to speak. "Yes, I have pheromone powers, and did commit crimes, but being held in a special cell where I couldn’t regularly contact other people…” She shuddered with what was well faked emotion.
Belinda Snow asked Evilabeth, “You admit to committing crimes with your powers, but how did you get released?”
Evilabeth smirked, “Sweetie, I practised with my powers to the point where I figured I could influence a large group of people. Now I'm going to rob that bank on the corner.”
At this, the two Light Force heroines tensed, ready for action. Evilabeth saw them and waved her hands at the crowd. “Look, boys, two superhero women! Aren't they so adorable?”
An instant later, a mob of men rushed towards the Light Force members shouting, "We adore you! Don’t go after her. Let her rob that bank!”
Coldfire and Blue Flame were slowed down by reason of not wanting to hurt any innocents. This left Evilabeth free to stroll past the crowd towards the bank, where she waved her hands at the guards and they escorted her in.
Belinda took advantage of the commotion to step away and confront Carlson as Speedster.
Evilabeth saw her newest challenger and instructed the men in the bank to mob Speedster with the same artificial adoration with which the crowd had swarmed Coldfire and Blue Flame. Unfortunately for Carlson, Speedster simply raced past her pheromone induced admirers, and ran several hundred laps of the lobby, clearing the air of the pheromones. As her victims started to come to their senses, Blue Flame and Coldfire had made it through the crowd. Coldfire exclaimed, “Thanks, Speedster, for slowing her down.”
“No fair,” Evilabeth hissed, “Where’s a male superhero to influence when you need one?”
Not deigning to respond, Coldfire simply froze Evilabeth's feet to the floor. A moment later Blue Flame fired a laser blast to stun Evilabeth. She then turned to their friend, “Can you disperse our adoring fans so we can return her to jail?”
Speedster responded, “Sure, and my station videotaped the press conference, including her confession, so she won’t be able to try the same trick again.”
That night, Rebecca and Rex watched the news, which included Snow interviewing Winston. “I don’t get it. She made me feel so special, but my adoring of her was all fake?”
At Coldfire’s house, her husband Megawatt said, kissing her, “I really adore you for putting her on ice. The lack of patrol time was making me twitchy.”
