Through the topic of gambling,
I’m reminded again
Of the words of Mark Twain.
As he thinked
Of a famous animal instinct.
It’s called horse sense;
And he said it prevents
Them from betting on people....
Yes folks, this rhyming is a tad feeple….
Few places have tried harder
Than the state of Nevada,
For down through the ages
Their refrain is “Viva Lost Wages!”
You’ll find many a casino
In the city of Reno,
Where local churches became affected
As offerings were collected.
For church treasurers frowned
When in collection plates they found
Casino chips instead of money.
It was just not funny.
Recognising this gambling habit,
The Franciscan Abbott
Stepped up to the plate
To commiserate.
“Stop curling your lips;
Send us those chips!
We’ll turn them to cash
For they’re too good to trash,
We’ll take them to your banks
And we'll appreciate your thanks.”
By including the monks in the picture,
The churches quickly grew richer
While back at the “money-stery,”
The friars changed history.
Every single friar.
Embraced this higher
Calling.
(And for some this may be galling)
For by changing their name
They became
Known as the chip monks…
Yet sadly,
It all turned out so badly,
Forsooth
A great biblical truth
They all chose to forget
- That the wagers of sin is debt!
