“Just thinking,” she answered. “You done this before? What I mean is …”
“Yeah, sure. But it’s not like it’s with everyone I meet – but yeah, I can handle it.”
They entered the little seaside resort of Misty Bay and drove down the single main street, eventually stopping outside a small hotel with a signboard outside reading ‘Happy Holiday Inn’.
“I made a reservation,” he said. “You gonna wait here while I check in?”
“What did you tell them when you called?”
“About what?”
“You know – who we are.”
“Well, I didn’t say ‘Mr. and Mrs.’ if that’s what you mean.”
“So what did you say?”
“What difference does it make? Do you still want to do this, or not?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“You said you were happy to take our relationship to the next level; so let’s do it.”
“Did you bring … stuff?”
“What stuff?”
“You know … stuff to put on.”
“No, I thought you were going to get fixed up with …”
“I said only if it worked out – it didn’t work out.” She folded her arms. “I saw a drug store up the road, I guess you’ll have to go and get some … things.”
He swallowed hard. “Yeah, okay – later; let’s go check in.”
“You go. You can bring the key back, then I’ll go straight to the room.”
“Is that how it’s gonna be the whole weekend – you ducking and diving all the time? Some fun that will be.”
“I just don’t feel like seeing the check-in clerk, that’s all.”
The room was cosy, with a king-sized bed, a small bathroom and a partial view of the ocean. “It’s a bit cold and windy to go to the beach right now,” he said, peering through the curtains.
“Yeah, not very inviting. Let’s go for a walk along the main road; you’ll need to pop into the drugstore before …”
“Okay, I know. But let’s have a bit of a cuddle first before we go, just to break the ice a bit.” He put his arm around her shoulder, eased her back against the cushions and kissed her cheek. Suddenly there was a loud bang against the wall of their room, and they could hear raised voices in the next room. Another thump – a woman’s cry; then a door banged.
“Shouldn’t we go a see?” she said. “Someone could be hurt.”
“Yeah, I guess – but let’s be careful.”
They made their way down the corridor. The door of the next room was slightly ajar. He put his head through the door and called: “Everything all right in there?”
A woman stood up from the bed and came to the door. She had a cut above her right eye; blood was running down her cheek. “You okay?” he asked. “We’re in the room next door – heard noises – thought we’d come and check.”
She was a large redhead wearing cheap makeup, not very tastefully applied. They could smell alcohol on her breath. She looked them over. “Come in.”
“What happened?” he asked.
She didn’t answer, instead asked: “You two on holiday?”
“Just for the weekend.”
The readhead smiled. “It starts like that. You meet; you chat; you go away somewhere - everything’s great. He tells you he loves you. One thing leads to another; you do it - many times. You think he still loves you. You go away for a weekend and you tell him you’re pregnant. He throws his toys out the cot and swears at you for not being careful – as if it’s all up to me.” Now there were tears running down her cheeks, mixing with the blood and the rougue. “Suddenly he doesn’t love you anymore; you stand up to him; he clobbers you.”
She wiped her eyes. “Enough about me, what are you two up to?”
They looked at each other, then she said: “We had plans, but the weather’s bad. Guess we’ll just go back home.”
The redhead smiled and took her arm. “Keep it till you’ve got a ring on your finger, honey. A pastor once told me God ordained marriage, not fornication – I didn’t listen. You don’t look stupid, so be smart and wait.”
“Yeah … thanks.” Standing up she took his hand. “Let’s go for a walk – guess we’ll skip the drug store.”
