Moses shook his head and sighed as he reminded the Israelite leaders, “A second time I went up the mountain to plead for our people—for forty days and nights. They are a stubborn and rebellious people, I tell you, but the LORD agreed not to destroy them. We are to continue leading them to the land they have been promised.”

Looking intently at those gathered, Moses focused on their questions, “What should we do? What does the LORD want us to do?”

His answer was adamant. “Fear the LORD your God. Walk in all His ways, love Him, and serve Him with all your heart and soul, observing all His commands and decrees.” (Deuteronomy 10:12 NIV). “If you hold fast to Him…every place you set your foot will be yours…” (Deuteronomy 11:22,24 NIV)

Joshua led the Israelites well. As he was nearing the end of his life, he summoned the Eastern Tribes to give final instructions. “Be very careful to keep the commandments and the laws that Moses gave you: love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, obey his commands, hold fast to him and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.” (Joshua 22:5 NIV)

Time went on. God sent His Son, Jesus, who paid for our redemption. He reaffirmed that the most important commandment is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30 NIV) When He departed this earth His faithful disciples and loyal workers continued leading not only the Jews, but also the Gentiles. Peter, the leader of the early church admonished the Believers to embrace Christianity as God’s Truth, and stand fast in it. (1 Peter 5:12 NIV)

Two thousand years later God’s promises and instructions are still true. It is easy to become dismayed and impatient. There is unrest on campuses, in our cities, and in our government. Even nature is at unrest with violent storms, earthquakes, and floods. You may ask “what should we do?” I go to the letter written to the Hebrews. The author encourages, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful…spur one another on toward love and good deeds…do not give up meeting together…encourage one another…” (Hebrews 10:23-25 NIV)

It seems to me that God’s Word is worthy of belief. From the earliest days of time, throughout the centuries, until now, the message is the same. Hold on securely to God’s instructions and promises. Keep His commandments and walk in all His ways. Stand fast until God’s plan for mankind is accomplished.
