They wanted to make a name for themselves and settle in one place, in rebellion against the Lord. After the mighty flood God had given the survivors a mandate to spread out across the earth but they decided they knew better than God himself and took matters into their own hands.
The men and women of the city of Babel thought they were invincible. But the Lord was displeased when He saw what they were doing. All the tribes shared a common language and it had become a problem. He knew that if they continued scheming together then nothing was going to be beyond their means.
In order to slow the collective insurrection of mankind God decided to take away their universal language; to create chaos and confusion, scattering them across the earth, to create a world of foreign nations.
Communication and co-operation became difficult. Partition of land divided hearts and minds. A distrust of those who looked and spoke differently crept in. Family became foe, hurt became hate and wrangles became wars.
It was into this fractured and fallen world that Christ appeared. He lived and loved for over thirty years in a society that ultimately rejected Him and nailed Him to a tree. But neither the Romans nor the Jews could keep the Son of God in His grave. After a battle against the powers of sin and darkness He rose again – victorious!
Christ’s death and resurrection, not only bridged the gap of sin that had lay between us and God for centuries, it also gave countries of the world the ability to communicate again. It happened in a miraculous way on the day of Pentecost.
Life had been turbulent for the disciples from the moment Jesus had been arrested and now he had left them to join His Father in Heaven. There was strength and companionship in numbers, as they sat in a house in Jerusalem, waiting in anticipation for the promised power of the Holy Spirit.
Without warning there came down from Heaven a violent wind that filled the room. They looked around and saw what appeared to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. It was a surreal experience beyond anything they had experienced before.
Everyone was filled with the Holy Spirit, just as Jesus had foretold. Immediately they began
speaking in other languages, declaring the wonders of God. The foreign Jews in the city heard the noise and soon a crowd gathered in bewilderment as each one heard their own language being spoken. How could these monolingual Galileans be communicating fluently in so many different tongues?
It wasn’t just a defining moment in the disciples lives, it was also a demonstration of God’s purpose to unify men and women in Christ’s love so that the Gospel could be spread among the nations.
At Babel, human pride had led to confusion and division as one language was fragmented into many. On the day of Pentecost, the power of the Holy Spirit brought understanding and unity as all languages became communicable.
Mankind could never reach Heaven by its own strength, it took Christ to come to Earth, and now God was gathering the nations together again, through the Gospel of His Son.
It doesn’t matter where we are born, what colour our skin is or what dialect we speak we are united as one when we accept our position as a child of God, allowing the Holy Spirit to unify us. Through grace we are born again into one family.
If we allow Him, Christ will cut through all our lofty aspirations; our drive for recognition, riches and respect. He will tear down our towers of pride and power that lead to confusion and division and he will replace them with tabernacles of love and grace.
