God made a covenant with Abraham and his offspring regarding land that would one day be theirs. He said, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.” God used rivers to set the boundary for his covenant with Abraham. That boundary still stands today for the nation of Israel, and one day all the land that was promised to Abraham will belong to Israel.
God created some of the most beautiful and unique rivers in the world. And only God could create something so magnificent. Here are some facts you may not know regarding some of these awesome rivers, and perhaps the reason God created them.
The Colorado River in the United States flows for approximately 1,450 miles and provides water to seven states: Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, California, and Nevada.
The Congo is the deepest river in the world. It is approximately 1.09 miles above sea level and flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
The largest river in the world is the Nile. It is 4,132 miles long. In the Scriptures the Nile is both a river for death and life. In Exodus we read the account of two midwives, Puah and Shiphrah, who were ordered by Pharaoh to let the Hebrew women keep their baby girls born to them, but all baby boys would be cast into the Nile. Yet, it was in the Nile River that baby Moses was placed, in a basket made of bulrushes, which then floated its way into the arms of Pharaoh’s daughter. Moses eventually rescued the Hebrew children from the horrific hands of Pharaoh.
We can’t forget the Amazon River, who some would say is the longest river at 4,000 miles. An interesting fact about the Amazon is this river used to flow in the opposite direction than it does now. But the formation of the Andes mountains have blocked access to the Pacific Ocean forcing the water to go in reverse. Now it discharges into the Atlantic Ocean.
China’s Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia at 3,915 miles. It is a crucial fixture in Chinese culture. The Yangtze provides half of the fish consumed in the country, as well as two-thirds of all the rice.
The Danube River is the second-longest river in Europe at 1,770 miles. What makes the Danube one of the most famous rivers in the world? Four European capitals are right on the river: Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, and Belgrade.
We can’t forget the Mighty Mississippi River in the United States. It is the second longest river in North America, approximately 3,710 miles. It passes through or borders ten different states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana.
An interesting trivia regarding Jeremiah:
"The Lord said to me, Go and buy a linen loincloth and wear it, but don’t wash it—don’t put it in water at all. So I bought the loincloth and put it on. Then the Lord’s message came to me again. This time he said, Take the loincloth out to the Euphrates River and hide it in a hole in the rocks.
So I did; I hid it as the Lord had told me to. Then, a long time afterwards, the Lord said: Go out to the river again and get the loincloth. And I did; I dug it out of the hole where I had hidden it. But now it was mildewed and falling apart. It was utterly useless!
Then the Lord said: This illustrates the way that I will rot the pride of Judah and Jerusalem. This evil nation refuses to listen to me and follows its own evil desires, and worships idols; therefore, it shall become as this loincloth—good for nothing. Even as a loincloth clings to a man’s loins, so I made Judah and Israel to cling to me, says the Lord. They were my people, an honor to my name. But then they turned away."
Let’s not be a nation that turns away from God.
One day we can enjoy the River of Life that flows from the throne of God and the Lamb in the New Heaven.
