Megawatt refrained from rolling his eyes at his teammate while answering, “Because that’s where the new group of superheroes are based that the government wants us to check out.”
Diamond cut in in his brash tone, “Betting it’s a promotion for a movie..”
His wife agreed, “Look at the name they are calling themselves, the Peacekeepers.”
Megawatt responded, “We’ll see shortly.”
They arrived in Ocean City as a group of bank robbers were leaving a bank. Megawatt cautioned his team, “Let’s see if the Peacekeepers show up,” as they landed on a building a block away.
Just as the thieves reached their getaway car seven other brightly clad figures surrounded them.
Strongman spoke loudly enough for the Light Force to hear a block away, “Surrender, you miscreants.”
Diamond muttered just loud enough for the others to hear, “He’s got the dialogue down, but ‘miscreants’?”
Detective threw a weighted rope which tangled up the leader of the group, while Alien grabbed twi more by the collars. Fastboy grumbled, “You couldn’t have left one for me?”
Space Cop rebuked him saying, “As long as we stopped them it doesn’t matter who did it.”
Fishman agreed, reminding that they were Peacekeepers, not glory hounds. Princess stood next to the two men showing her agreement.
Megawatt rhetorically asked, “Everyone else planning to head down to meet them?”
As the police took the robbers away Megawatt landed silently behind Strongman and said, “Nice tight work there. Big guy.”
The Peacekeepers tensed realizing the Light Force had gathered around them. Noticing the tension Blue Flame raised her hands, “We’re not looking to fight.”
Detective confronted her, “Then why are you here?”
Blue Flame looked to Megawatt to answer the question. Megawatt turned to the gray clad figure and said, “We were asked by the government to see if you people are legit of not.”
Space Cop, his powerband glowing red, asked, “What would you have done if we weren’t legitimate?’
Coldfire responded for her husband, “We were told to ask you to keep a very low profile.”
Princess rounded on Coldfire fists raised, “And if we refused? Who are you to decide if we can continue keeping the peace?”
Megawatt stepped between the women, “It was only supposed to be a request, As to who we are, we are accepted by the US government as official law enforcement. We won’t tell you not to help local police.”
Alien spoke in his deep voice, “What would you plan on telling the government?’
Megawatt responded, “To let your team mature before calling on the Peacekeepers to handle major threats.”
Fastboy said, “Can you believe the arrogance of these Shoobees, telling us how to do our jobs?”
Fishman had turned his attention to Mariness, “Any tips on fighting undersea crime? I’m strong enough on land, but I wouln’t mind hearing some trade secrets/”
Amazing Woman had in the meantime responded to Fastboy, “We are, as Megawatt said, recognized by the federal government.”
Strongman inserted his way into the conservation, “What do you suggest to do about the Peacekeepers?’
Megawatt responded, “That we watch you for a few days and if we like what we see, to leave you alone.”
Strongman grunted, “Fastboy was right about you. But if it eases the government’s concerns about us, so be it. You are welcome to stay at our headquarters. We built it next to the library.”
Diamond responded, Why didn’t we see it flying in?”
Alien responded, “It has an invisibility shield, technology from my home world.”
Princess complained, “Why show them to our base?”
Strongman responded, “Because, we have nothing to hide. Besides, if they give us any trouble I’m sure we can teach them some manners.”
Space Cop responded, “Whatever, as long as they don’t eat all of my cookie stash.”
After a week of quietly observing the Peacekeepers, Megawatt gathered his team and asked, “Who thinks they are ready?”
Six gloved hands raised in responce to Megawatt’s question. Megawatt walked into the main room where the Peacekeepers were sitting. “We’re going to inform the government, that in our professional opinion, you can keep the peace for as long as you want to.”
As they flew home Gravitron opined, “We should have at least copied the plans for their invisibility shield. Someday we have to stop using the bookstore as a headquarters.”
