We come from a culture that has bread as a staple. We eat sandwiches and serve dinner rolls with our meals. This new place eats very little bread. Their staple is rice.
One of my weaknesses has been sweet rolls for breakfast. Not all the time, but often. I soon discovered that that would have to change. Toast and jelly were not even an option.
Our area was blessed with a small 7/11 Convenience Store. Among the few things that looked familiar, I spotted some packaged donuts. I grabbed one up and headed for the cashier. The next morning I fixed my coffee, filled my bowl with oatmeal, and eagerly opened the donut package. To my surprise that tempting bit of pastry was filled with pork. Pork, as in meat! Who would have thought of such a thing? I soon learned that that is the way they did pastries there.
Following church a few weeks later, someone suggested we go to the Rimping Supermarket/Restaurant for lunch. A bonus was, this particular store specialized in foods and other items expats may be longing for.
Sure enough, a table near the bakery displayed a number of tantalizing creations. Among them was a cake that resembled a coffee cake complete with icing and nuts. My heart beat with joy. Finally, a taste of home. I eagerly grabbed it up and dreamed of the next morning’s breakfast.
I wish I could report that my patience had finally been rewarded. Regrettably, when I cut into that longed-for pastry, it was full of pork. And I wondered—how long had it sat on that display table, warm and unrefrigerated. There may have been tears!
A few weeks later, we moved into new living quarters, and it had a stove with a little oven. It didn’t take long for me to dig through things I had brought with me, and found my recipe for cinnamon rolls. I did share them, but I truly savored every bite of those I ate!
My mind still drifts back to this experience now and then, and my heart is pricked with the thought—do I hunger and long for God and His Word as strongly as I longed for that treat? Am I as determined to be satisfied with His Truth?
In the Sermon on the Mount, our Lord stated, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6 NIV). King David encourages us throughout the Psalms to make seeking God a priority. Psalm 34 is full of such promises, “Taste and see that the Lord is good…those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.” (Psalm 34:8-10 NIV)
“Jesus, thank you for those things that make life sweet. Please help me to seek You first, and those things that will truly satisfy the longings of my soul. I give You thanks, amen.”
