Abram and Sarai didn’t wait on the Lord’s timing for Sarai to give birth. They took matters into their own hands. Sarai gave her servant Hagar to Abraham, and Hagar gave birth to Ismael.
Today, people hunger after many different things. They chase after money, status, power, homes, relationships, and the list goes on. It is easy for these things to turn into idols. When Paul visited Athens, he discovered the Athenians, had a god for every area of life. They even built a statue for an unknown god.
There are many lures that attract people into the web of I need this now. commercials. Commercials attempt to convince you that you can not live without their product. You need this item to fit into society today. I have heard people say, “I deserve this car. I deserve this or that because I work hard.” Then down the road there are regrets.
I was following the secular world. I was caught up in the trap, being happy if my circumstances were what I wanted. That happiness changed when my circumstances changed. I drifted along to whatever way I was pushed by the world. My wife convinced me to attend church with her one Sunday. I did and it seemed like the message was tailored made for me. Within three months, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior and shortly afterward was baptized.
The more I hungered after Jesus the more peace I enjoyed. I noticed people I use to associate with began to drift out of my life. My desire to communicate with them was not there. My work schedule changed through no effort of my own allowing me to attend bible classes on Wednesday evenings.
I was one who would never ask for help. I viewed it as a sign of weakness. What would you think of me if I asked you to help me? It was pride that held me back. Solomon wrote in Proverbs 15:22, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Good advice slowly I began to put it into action. The more I followed this advice, the less anxiety I had when I made decisions.
One of the hardest things I find to do is to wait. Wait on the Lord. At times I fall into thinking I must have this now or I have to do this now. When I follow through with not waiting the result is frustration. When I want to rush into something Psalm 27:14 comes to mind, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
No matter the challenges I face I am not alone. Jesus is as close as my breath. I can not do without Him. John 15:5 Jesus tells us, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” I believe what Jesus said to Paul and he recorded in 2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” May I hunger for Him with every breath.
