New plants in the wild are vulnerable.
Many reasons for that abound,
So they may not live to maturity,
But falter and no longer be ‘round.
If planted near some larger plants
More mature, stronger, more stable,
They have a better chance of survival,
The large plants making them able.
The seedlings get protection from weather
Or more moisture to keep them alive,
Richer nutrients in their soil,
Larger plants actually cause them to thrive.
By God’s design, the large plant
Also benefits from its role.
Studies show it bears more flowers,
So more seeds for more plants-- the goal. [1]
The same is often true with people
When the mature person is planted with others,
And grows right next to the younger
As protection for the weaker brother.
Sometimes in our churches we find
Groups made of birds of a feather,
When mixing the people might yield
More support when growing together.
Many years ago, I was suffering inside;
I was in peril and desperately floundering.
Would my faith survive this season?
I was floating without much grounding.
My faith roots were shallow,
My resources inadequate,
But mature women of the church
Protected me so I didn’t quit.
Choose where you plant yourself--
Whether it’s next to those who can protect,
Or maybe you are the one for another
Whose crisis you can deflect.
