The restaurant was full. Ray and Norma sat in a secluded alcove waiting for the dessert to arrive. Norma looked into his stunning blue eyes set against a clean-cut tanned face and wavy blond hair. She said, “I’m still not sure why you’re taking me out again, after all, you’re a fashion designer with a bevy of beautiful women around you every day.”
He sighed, “Things have changed a lot recently. Of those beautiful women around me every day an increasing number are deciding to ‘explore their sexuality’ in other directions while others are just plain cold as ice.”
Norma smiled, “You mean even your good looks don’t thaw them?”
“Afraid not, but let’s talk about us for a while.”
“Us …?” she said, “what in particular about ‘us’?”
He said, “Well, this is our third date and I feel we’ve hardly made first base. What about coming back to my place for some coffee, and we can try for second or even third.”
Norma sighed, “Look Ray, I thought I made it clear that although I find you attractive and charming I am in no hurry to go any further at this point in time.”
“Is there something wrong with me, am I doing something you don’t like?”
“No, from what I’ve seen of you so far I don’t have a problem. I just don’t want to rush into anything.”
“Are you still a virgin and worried about your first time; is that it?” Ray’s tone was now more aggressive.
Norma looked taken aback by this question. “I really don’t think that’s an appropriate question and I think we can consider this matter closed. My physical status is nobody else’s concern. I’ll decide when I’m ready to change bases. I think I’d like to be taken home now.”
“I’m sorry to have offended you, I didn’t mean to. What about a Manhattan before we go just to calm us down?” He summoned the waiter.
“Okay, one last drink. I need to go and powder my nose while you order.”
The drinks arrived as Norma was leaving the ladies room. Ray removed something from his pocket, allowing it to drop into Norma’s glass before she arrived back. They sipped their drinks in silence, both realizing this could be their last date. After a while Norma started to feel dizzy and slightly nauseous. “I don’t feel well at all,” she said, aware that she was slurring her words.
“Ok, let’s get you home,” Ray said placing an arm around her as he helped her out her seat. They made for the door with Ray explaining to anyone enquiring she had a bit too much to drink. He called a cab—and gave his address.

The room was dimly lit with disco-type lights strobing the darkness. Music was playing in the background. Norma tried again to get up off the bed but her muscles failed to respond. The man she had become aware of started touching her all over, then she felt her clothing being removed. She felt a heavy weight on top of her. She tried to scream but no sound came out. All she managed was to groan, “Oh God, not this. Please let it stop.”
There was a loud crash and the weight was lifted from her. She became aware of a scuffle in the room, then a voice, “Lie still. I’ve just given you an antidote injection, you’ll be feeling better soon.”
“Who are you? What happened?” Norma asked, feeling the haze slowly lifting.
“I’m doctor McKenzie and my friend, who has just arrested the perp, is Sergeant Des Arlow of the local police. I saw you leaving the restaurant looking dreadful and from my experience I suspected what might happen. I overheard the address given to the cab driver and called Sergeant Arlow. You had a lucky escape, young lady—don’t get caught again.”
