There are many references in the Bible, where people admitted, “I have sinned against God.” an example is from Genesis 39:9. Joseph was tempted a number of times to commit adultery with his master's wife. He resisted her every time. He told her, “My master has withheld nothing from me, except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” Potipher would’ve been affected by an act of adultery, but Joseph’s loyalty was to God and his laws. He did not want to offend God.
When David realized he had sinned with Bathsheba, we find him repenting in great sorrow, saying to God, “Against you and You only have I sinned.” Psalm 51:4. David had sinned against Bathsheba, and her husband Uriah, but violating the Lord’s law grieved David more. God hates sin because it goes against his nature and because it harms others.
We were created in the image of God, and we have his moral law written within our hearts. Genesis 1:27 Sin is against God’s perfect design. We are made in the image of God and when we sin, we soil that image. When we sin, we step outside the purpose for which we were created. We violate God’s moral law, and we are accountable to him for this iniquity. Sin is anything that falls short of God’s plan. When we sin, we harm ourselves and usually someone else. Rest assured every sin is ultimately against our holy God.
I had a vision where I was standing on a mountain top. I peered out over a body of blue water. This water was surrounded by mountains. The mountains flourished with trees of every color of green. The sky was cloudless and blue. The air felt refreshing on my skin. I was enjoying the view, and I recall, I whispered, “look how beautiful.” Then I heard a voice say, “You should’ve seen me before sin.” It was as if all of creation spoke to me.
How has our sin affected nature? I look how nature is crying out with tornadoes, tsunamis, flooding, the shrinking of glaciers, the extinction of animal, life, and vegetation. In Genesis 3:17-19 the Lord cursed the ground. The curse was not directly toward Adam. His life will be marked by toil, thorns and thistles, sweat, and finally death. Before the fall, the ground did not have all these weeds and was much more pleasant to work.
In Colossians 1:17 “He is before all things and in him all things hold together. Does Jesus influence the weather? Matthew 8 says Jesus and the disciples were on the lake when a storm arose. Jesus was sleeping and the disciples woke him, scared that they were going to drown. Jesus got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds, and the waves obey him!”
God sometimes causes natural disasters as a punishment against sin. James writes in 5:17. Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
Sin effects everything. Everything in creation is subject to frustration and decay. Sin is the cause of natural disasters, just as it is the cause of death and suffering. Creation awaits the day when it will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom it once enjoyed.
Like us, nature awaits the return of Jesus to make all things right. When Jesus returns, nature will flourish. The rivers will flow clean. The oceans will be unpolluted. The vegetation will be thick and lush. Fruit trees will produce fruit like we’ve never seen. Our crops will grow thick. Animals that were bitter enemies will wander through the plains and mountains together. Perfect order. Most of all His will will be done.
