Topic: Lamp on a Stand (Matthew 5:14-16, Mark 4:21-22, Luke 8:16-17,11:33) (01/11/24)
Reminiscing recently, I recalled an incident from my early childhood. During a class at church I qualified to select a reward from the Treasure Box. I chose a small plastic cross. This was not just an ordinary plastic trinket. It was made from materials that glowed in the dark.

I was quite enthralled with it. I learned quickly that I couldn’t stick it in a drawer and hope to see its glow on random nights. It had to be placed near a light source during the day. I remember being careful to position it where it would get plenty of light from a nearby window or a well-placed lamp.

Through the years more sophisticated toys have capitalized on this glow-in-the-dark concept. But still, to be useful, items must be exposed to a light source for recharging.

This reminds me so much of the importance of our relationship to Jesus. We are living in a dark world. In order to provide light for those living in the dark, we need to be recharged often. We do this by spending time with Jesus, our light source.

The Apostle John declared that Jesus is “the light (that) shines in the darkness.” (John 1:5 (NIV). And, Jesus himself clearly states, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 NIV)

Prayer and reading our Bibles are two obvious ways to recharge. In addition, Isaiah 58:10 (NIV) suggests that our good deeds are as a light rising in the darkness. I think this is saying what we do in Jesus’ name can also give light to those around us.

Another interesting fact I found is the longer the glow-in-the-dark object is left in the light, the brighter and longer lasting the glow will be! That tells me we must not only spend time with Jesus, but we must not skimp on our time with Him!

“Father, I want to shine long and bright in the darkness of this world. Help me to stay close to Jesus absorbing as much of His light as possible. Amen.”

Just like Jesus would use objects His listeners were familiar with you used an object we’re all familiar with to make a great point. Great job and congratulations on your EC.
