When I see a Monet or a Grandma Moses painting, I am gripped with envy. How satisfying it must be to paint such breath-taking images. I still envy a friend from Jr High School that could produce, with only a pencil, realistic scenes and people. And she did so effortlessly.
I came to believe the secret is gracefulness. I have watched artists hold brushes loosely and lightly place strokes of paint across the canvas. I often gasp, thinking they have ruined the picture, then watch as it turns into a tree, or a stream, or beautiful flower.
Since gracefulness does not seem to be one of my natural gifts, I have accepted my ineptness of being an artist, and resigned myself to admiring the work of others.
Then, not so many years ago, I was in Thailand for a period of time. While there I visited a center that displayed the abilities of trained elephants. These huge, lumbering beasts could kick soccer balls, sink a ball into an elevated hoop, and stack humongous logs.
Towards the end of the show, I looked aghast as the trainers set up some paint easels. I wondered who else or what else was part of the show. Then I saw three large, awkward elephants amble over to the easels. I tell you no lie, these large, clumsy creatures picked up a brush with their nose, dipped it in paint and carefully stroked the paper to produce recognizable pictures!
Admittedly, the drawings were mostly trees and large flowers. But, still, they encouraged me. The art was a big item in the gift shops, appearing on wall hangings, tee-shirts, and other memorabilia. I basked for days in the inspiration imparted by these elephants. Maybe there is hope for me! I have learned since, however, that these ungainly beasts, exhibiting such unbelievable skill, work for mere peanuts!
