However, I did have a fondness for tea. I am still not sure if it was the taste, or the memories it evoked. My grandmother lived several houses down the street from us. From the time I could sit and converse I would often scurry down to Grandma’s for a chat. Sometimes I was upset with a sibling, or my parents. As I got older, I may have been troubled about a problem with a friend, or worried about a test.
I would sit down at the kitchen table, and it wasn’t long until Grandma set a soothing cup of hot tea down in front of me. I still remember the aura created. First of all, just having a hot cup set in front of me gave me a sense of being grown up. The smells varied, but the aroma I remember most was the sweet scent of cinnamon.
Just thinking about the experience elicits a feeling of calmness. I would stir just a tad bit of sugar into the brew, and actually feel the tension leave my body. As I gingerly lifted the little pouch of tea from the hot water to my saucer, I noticed the small tag that was attached. Brisk — the name of this brand of tea was Brisk. And, after all these years, if I walk down the aisle of a grocery store and happen to see the logo, I begin reminiscing the sweet memories of my visits with my Grandmother.
The soothing effects of cinnamon have been known probably as long as man has existed. Exodus 30:23 records the LORD’s instructions for the sacred anointing oil to be used in the wilderness tabernacle. It was to contain a generous amount of cinnamon.
In recent years we have seen an upsurge in the use of oils and scents. Cinnamon is still being promoted as a brain booster, promising a calming effect that will result in joy and happiness.
Some might say my Grandma was wise beyond her time. Who would have thought a simple drink could have such value. The investment of time in the life of another person, regardless of age, is to be valued as well. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we just all sat down now and then and had a cup of tea!
