Topic: UNBORN (07/27/23)
Maria grabbed her husband’s hand as Dr. Saytone looked at them from his side of the massive oak desk. The pastel-green walls seemed to close in on her as she mentally prepared herself for the results of her blood and screening tests. Rubbing her belly with the other hand, she soothed the new life within her.

“Mr. And Mrs. Cruz, I must inform you that your baby has Downs Syndrome. I recommend we abort it as soon as we can get the procedure on the schedule.”

Recoiling, the middle-aged couple looked at one another. Maria’s eyes welled as she tried to maintain control of her emotions.

“No, absolutely not! We knew the risk of having a child so late in life.” Jose retorted.

“We are Christians and know that God is in charge.” Maria gently answered, running her hand on her husband’s arm to calm him.

Jose added, “And we know the medical complications. If this is what God wants for us, then so be it. We will not end this pregnancy.”

Sighing while shuffling paperwork into a pile, the doctor responded. “Listen, I know this is harsh news, but statistics show that disabled children have little to no quality of life.”

Hands slamming the desk, Jose argued, "You are wrong! The Bible says everyone is 'fearfully and wonderfully made.’ God has a reason for creating babies with disabilities. I have known many who grew into productive adults. Even if he has a short life, God has plans for him."

“Those kind of people have no business living.” Dr. Saytone admonished.

“What! I cannot believe you said that,” Jose proclaimed, leaping to his feet. “You are suppose to save lives, not murder innocent babies.”

Caressing her slight baby belly, Maria’s chocolate brown eyes flared. “We will have this baby, and he will be loved for as long as he lives.”

Pushing back in his office chair and standing, Dr. Saytone calmly remarked: “Then you must find another doctor.” Opening the door, he walked out, calling behind his shoulder: “Good day.”

Six months later, Andrew was born. His curly black hair highlighted his almond-shaped green eyes. The nurses were astounded at the glow that seemed to come from his little face.

“He is a special gift from God,” Maria marveled as she gazed at her beautiful son.

Mr. And Mrs. Cruz loved the precious little boy -- their only child. Despite his weak heart, Andrew lived a happy life. He loved the Lord, singing Jesus Loves Me everywhere he went. Many felt drawn to this special child who readily blessed others with his joy in life.

As a young adult, Andrew worked at a thrift store. His difficult-to-understand speech did not deter staff and customers from talking with him. Everyone adored the effervescent worker. He delighted anyone willing to see him as a special gift from God. Each day, he’d return home, sharing with his parents all the wonderful things he had encountered.

Andrew began having memory issues after turning fifty, forgetting that both parents had previously died. He resided in a group home of peers, loved by staff and house-mates. Although weakened with cardiac issues, he never forgot about God, vocally conversing with his Lord and singing his favorite song —Jesus Loves ME. Andrew’s special light blessed others that tended to his needs.

One day, his heart could beat no more. A brilliant light filled his room, as a gentle voice called out:

“Andrew, it’s time to come home and be with ME.”

Knowing who was speaking, he raised bluish hands, and stepped into Heaven. Andrew’s body was Reborn and made whole.

Many lives were changed as a result of Andrew’s testament to the joy of the Lord. Because he was allowed the chance to live, his life was one that gave glory to God.

This is a beautiful story and I read it as a summation of life from womb to Heaven. I admired Andrew’s parents as much as the joy carrier himself.
I think it read very well and ran the impact of ‘unborn’ from the moment of his parent's news and stand to Andrew’s life spent on earth waiting to be born into life in Heaven.

Powerful and filled with truth!

I tended to many individuals with this diagnosis. And in my experience, they were some of the most loveable, sweetest, and purest souls I'd encountered in my career.

Your story is the story of countless unknown selfless parents, who trusted that God’s ways are perfect. Countless life’s have been blessed by the simple faith of simple minds. We can all learn so much from them and their parents.
