“Man,” sighed Mark. “It has been a long, exhausting day. We certainly could use a little ‘down-time’ right about now.”
Matthew nudged Jesus and said, “Wasn’t that something today. Can you believe that Leper who came and knelt before you begging to be healed.”
Jesus wrapped his arm around Matthew and smiled. “I was simply doing what my Father would want me to do. He had been living as a leper long enough. He had faith I could heal him, and so I did.”
“Yeah, and what about that Centurion,” chimed in Mark. “Can you believe a Centurion came to you and asked for healing, and not for himself, but for his servant. A Centurion guys. A Roman officer. Even Gentiles can have faith that you can work in their lives, right Jesus?”
“Gentlemen, I have come for all to receive help and healing from me. Be they Jew, Gentile, or a Roman Centurion. God is no respecter of persons. Faith and healing is for all who will believe,” explained Jesus. “The Centurion had great faith, and when someone exhibits that amount of faith, it is my pleasure to respond to their desires.”
“You know Jesus,” sighed Peter. “The best part of our day was when you so graciously came to the home of my mother-in-law and healed her. She had been sick with a fever for many days. My beloved Sophia tried everything she could to make her well, but she only seemed to deteriorate with each passing day. Even the doctors couldn’t help. You simply touched her with your hand, and she was healed. Thank you my friend.”
Jesus lovingly touched Peter’s arm as he said, “She still has work to do for me.”
“Come on guys,” encouraged John. Let’s get in this boat and get moving. Looks like a storm could be brewing so we better move fast if we want to make it to the other side.
Jesus stepped into the boat and his disciples followed. “Men,” Jesus said, “I am really quite exhausted so I am going to the stern and lie down. I need some rest.”
“Okay, Jesus. We got it from here on out,” declared Peter.
Setting sail they enjoyed talking through the day, watching other boats as they followed near by, and simply enjoying the relaxed feel of the evening.
“This is the life,” said Matthew. “I love being on the water, enjoying the quiet, rehashing the day.”
“Oh-oh. Guys, I hate to break the news, but look at those clouds. Looks like a storm could be brewing,” a concerned James said.
Just then there was a crack of lightening, followed by thunder and the skies opened. The wind began to blow. The waves were threatening to overflow the boat.
“Hey guys,” shouted Peter. “I could use a little help here.”
“I thought you were the expert,” Judas said sarcastically. “What do you expect us to do?”
“I can’t hold this boat steady forever.” “I COULD USE SOME HELP!” An angry Peter cried. “Get up off your duffs and come help me or we are going to sink.”
“Okay, okay. Calm down. We’re doing our best,” said Matthew.
“Well right now your best isn’t good enough. We are going to sink. Will someone go and wake Jesus. Maybe he can help,” said an exhausted Peter.
“Hey Jesus,” shouted Matthew. “WAKE UP! Don’t you even care that we are in a storm and are about to die. COME HELP US. We’re afraid we’re going to sink.”
Now, fully awake, Jesus rebuked them gently and lovingly with a soft but stern reply, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he stilled the storm and the sea was quiet.
“Even the wind and sea obeys Jesus,” mumbled Thomas.
“Jesus,” Matthew whispered. “I’m so sorry we were so angry with you. I should not have shouted at you either. You’re right. Our faith was weak. We should have known that we could not sink with you in the boat with us. Thank you for your gentle reminder and please forgive us for our unbelief.”
“You are forgiven. Come on men, let’s get this boat to the other side. We have more work waiting for us there.”
Little did they know a bigger challenge would be facing them when they met the man from Gerasa.
