Think with me here. What is my soul? Why, it is me! It is my mind, my will, and my emotions. It is how I think, believe, and feel. I understsnd it is the sum of my true nature at a core level. How could I ever lose it without losing myself?
Who owns my soul? It can only be me: I am born the sole proprietor of it. No one else is responsible for what happens to it: only me. My soul can be strong or weak, saved or lost. It has free will and can choose what will happen to it.
Here is a sobering thought: every person has a soul and lives in a body. According to the Bible, the human soul is imperishable, and every human soul will live somewhere for eternity.
My body will die, but my soul will not; I will live forever. Should I choose to keep my soul for myself, I will reject the love of God and, as a result, have to pay for my own sins with death. (Romans 6:23.) Since the soul is eternal, it will be an eternal death. That is what it means to lose my soul.
Contrarily, if I will give my soul to Christ and accept His free gift of forgiveness by His atoning sacrifice, I will experience the opposite: eternal life and peace now and in heaven. (Psalm 23:2).
I will lose my soul if I try to hang on to it and follow its passions and lusts. If I gain everything this life offers and allow those things to be more important to me than He is, I will lose my soul. It will live forever without Him.
I was born the sole proprietor of my soul, and, as such, it was lost because it belonged only to me. I could do whatever I wanted, but I realized my soul was causing only problems as I grew into adulthood. I needed to let go of it and have a new birth. But how?
I had to choose:
Would I continue going my own way, thinking I was His but allowing Him only second place in my life? In so doing, I would lose my soul.
Or would I give it (my soul, me) to Him? That meant giving up my sole ownership of what I call "me" and giving it to Jesus in exchange for His life. Doing so would make me His new creation, reborn into a new life with Him. My old life of going my own way would be over.
Note the contrast between losing and giving. It was my choice. Would I lose it or give it?
After many failures in life, it became clear that I had to give up my sole proprietorship and give my soul to Him. It is the most crucial choice I have ever made and is available to anyone who is willing to give up their own way for His way.
