I often ponder
Has it really helped
To sit
In this blue room
And listen
To gut-wrenching
Drama trauma
As crying members
Share raw grief
In the wake
Of their loved ones demise
At times it does
In a misery loves company
Kind of way
For over a decade
I’ve seen members
Come and go
Ideally they move on
With grief forever
Grafted into them
Or they remain in limbo
And perpetuate sad rituals
Like leaving a jelly donut
On a headstone
Every day
I’ve seen so many
Tear stained cheeks
As I pass the tissues
But truth be told
Even my Valentine cupcakes
Cannot mend
A broken heart
Our loved ones
Are gone
Moved on
Rejoicing in Heaven
As we sit and simmer
And stir up
Their tired shadows
Because we miss them
They were a piece of us
And now a part of us
Is missing
Like a phantom limb
And that’s ok
It has to be ok
So we place it here
In this blue room
A makeshift grief depository
Which I’ve decided to paint
Baby chick yellow
Next week
I facilitate this group
So people can move on
And not get stuck gazing back
As they turn into a pillar of salt
And yet
Grief still prompts even me
To do odd things
Like try to call
The cell phone
Of my dearly departed
Hoping they will answer
***
But now
On this fine
February day
Holy Spirit has inspired
A Breakaway
Like unruly school children
Bursting through double doors
To play at recess
We will take our
Weary Hearts Club
On a field trip
***
So I plan
I prepare
I do the necessary life things
Like wait in a service department
As the church bus
Gets an oil change
These gray grieving walls
Encompass me
Black faux leather sofas
Fluorescent lights
Are draining my energy
While strangers
Stare at phones
So I decide to take
A deep dive
Into the abyss…
A writing prompt
To be exact
So like a deep sea diver
I immerse myself
To discover
What lies within
My murky subconscious
Trusting the spirit
To uncover something
Brilliant and bright
Hidden in the wrinkles
Of my gray matter
Like a shiny pearl
In the grit
Of an oyster
Outside these walls
The sunshine beckons me
While I’m still stuck
In this
Automotive purgatory
***
Finally
I’m free
I drive off
With all the bus windows down
And let the wind
Whip my silver strands of hair
Across my face
And snap me back to life
Daffodils
Have bloomed
In tired pastures
And peace
Pours into me
I pull over to
Gas up the tank
Tether my hair
Into a rubber band
Buy a large coffee
Granola bars
Fresh fruit
And a case of bottled waters
Back at the church
The bus groans to a halt
The squeaky accordion door
Opens wide
To welcome in
30 plus pilgrims
I was expecting
Maybe 10
For this spirit inspired
Pilgrimage
They pile in
With bulky bags
And their dog-eared Bibles
In my rear view mirror
I see their faces
Filled with excitement
Like children
On the first day of school
As together we embark
On our 542 mile road trip
To Asbury.
