I worked hard in high school so I could escape to college. On my first day of classes, I wrote in my journal, “Now I’ll find peace.”
Another voice whispered, “It’s only a piece.”
I didn’t enjoy college like I thought I would. But I graduated with honors and landed an amazing job. “Now,” I told myself, “I’ll find peace.”
But another voice whispered, “It’s only a piece.”
My job grew tiresome when they replaced my gregarious boss with a shrewd loner who gave me the creeps. I changed jobs, then met the love of my life. “This will bring peace,” I breathed at last.
Another voice whispered, “It’s only a piece.”
A marriage. A divorce. A lost job. My parents’ house, filled with their jabs about my bad choices. I yearned for peace. But I couldn’t find it.
A new boyfriend promised peace . . .
. . . but the voice said again, “It’s only a piece.”
Finally, one day, I stopped in my tracks and replied, “A piece of what?”
With my journal open and my Bible dusted off, I listened.
A piece of what you could experience. My plan for your life is one of extravagance, and it could have been yours long ago, if you hadn’t settled for less.
My life did a one-eighty. I grounded myself in the difference between temporary peace and what God called an extravagant plan.
When I first heard those words, I expected to be called into the mission field. Instead, God nudged me to resurrect the creative ambitions I’d left behind as a child who craved peace. Creating art and children’s stories flooded me with satisfaction, not because they delivered what I’d craved, but because God did.
Now . . . Now I’ve found peace.
