“Hi, this is Betty.”
“This doesn’t sound like Eddie,” Liz replied crisply.
“No, no. This is Betty,” her friend pronounced distinctly.
Liz tapped her phone to raise the volume. “Oh, yes. How are you?” She sat down at the kitchen table and listened carefully to hear more clearly what Betty was saying.
“Not bad. I had a little cold, but I try not to whine.”
“Oh, my, you’re not old. And you shouldn’t be drinking wine this early.”
“No, no.” Betty laughed, then went on with her conversation. “I called to ask about your son that is in England.”
Liz perked right up. She loved talking about her son Eddie. “Oh, he is doing wonderful. I had hoped he would come home after finishing Uni, but he isn’t ready yet. He is working as a Count. Can you believe it?”
“A Count?” Questioned Betty. “What does he do?”
“I’m not sure,” Liz confessed. “But I’m thinking it has something to do with the Royal Family. When he called to tell me, he said he was eating at The Palace.”
Liz smiled smugly as she perceived Betty was clearly impressed.
Later that evening, Liz received a call from her beloved son. She could hardly wait to hear more about his amazing job. “What exciting thing did you do today?”
It wasn’t a crystal clear connection, but Liz focused as hard as she could as Eddie told her he was trying to get ‘those higher up to cut back on expenses.’
“Good idea. I always thought they spent way too much.”
Liz strained to hear as Eddie continued, “I have been putting together some important info for a meeting. I will pick up the prints in the morning, and hopefully, there will be a consensus at the meeting tomorrow.”
As soon as Eddie said his goodbyes, Liz punched in Betty’s number. “Eddie just called to tell me about a big meeting he is having tomorrow. He plans to pick up a Prince for the meeting, and he hopes there will be a princess there as well.”
Liz was so excited about Eddie’s meeting that she called him the next evening. “Which Prince did you pick up, and was there a Princess at the meeting?” Before he could answer, Liz continued to gush, “Have you met the Queen yet?”
“Oh, no, Mama. I don’t think that is going to happen.”
“Don’t you see her when you eat at The Palace?”
“No, no, no, Mama. The Palace is a restaurant here in London.”
Liz’ heart sank as she tried to make sense of their conversation. “But aren’t you a Count? Surely a Count sees the Queen now and then!”
What a let down in Liz’ countenance as Eddie exclaimed, “Oh, no, no, Mama! I am not a Count. I said I am an Accountant!”
