Goldie, with a punctured lung and Max with several broken bones, looked at each other from their separate beds. Angie’s declaration moved neither.
“I heard you were nearly killed, and I couldn’t believe it. Only the hand of God could have saved you,” cried out Angie as she rushed over to them.
“Yes, we know that God had His hand in that, Angie, but I don’t think you’d call it a miracle,”
“Why only the good Lord could have saved you from that tragic event,” rebutted Angie with one hand over her heart and one hand raised to the heavens. “Not a miracle, Humph! What would you call it?”
“Well, Angie, we are so thankful that the Lord spared us and held our hand through this harrowing experience. And our heart goes out to those who succumbed to this catastrophic event,” said Goldie. Max confirmed with a nod of the head.
“What exactly happened? Interrupted Angie, still reeling from Goldie and Max’s narrow escape.
Yesterday, Goldie and Max were enjoying the gorgeous late spring weather and the captivating scenery as they traveled to church services. Interstate 40 in Eastern Oklahoma greeted them with its tall pines standing erect like soldiers lined up saluting a visiting president. The rolling hills rocked them rhythmically as they took in the scenic views. If only they had known what was ahead. The event played over again and again in Goldie’s head. She drifted back to that day.
“I hear there’s a guest speaker today,” Goldie said as she rolled down the window to take in some May breezes. Suddenly she screamed, “Max, Watch out!”
Max jerked the steering wheel sharply to the left. Tires squealed as he corrected the swerve and skidded to a stop, “ Oh my!” he screamed out, “That was close.” Little did he know that that little deer, which he almost hit, could have been part of the plan. That delay was no fluke.
They continued down their journey to church services, giggling about the near mishap. “Whew, some buzzard almost had venison for Sunday dinner, and the highway, you and me as dessert,” Max chuckled out, not knowing what lurked ahead.
They continued down the highway, hearts still thumping like scared rabbits when in the distance their world was about to be turned upside down. “Max, look out! What in the world? Noooo!” Screamed Goldie”
“Oh…God…God…Save uuuus!” pled Max.
Up ahead, cars were disappearing, one then another and another. They were next. They flew sixty-five feet then down thirty feet to within eight feet of the collapsed bridge’s edge. They would neither plunge into the murky waters of the Arkansas River nor be a fatality like the fourteen ahead of them.
Max and Goldie would learn later that there was a truck still above just feet from going over the edge of the collapsed road. It would have been instant death to both. Goldie was thrust back to the hospital room with a reality check by Angie, “Goldie! Are you okay? You were just staring into space.”
“Oh, yeah, what happened. A barge rammed into the bridge pillars and knocked out six-hundred feet of the highway. Cars and trucks plummeted into the river. We flew down with the road and landed just at the edge of the collapsed road feet from going into the water.” Goldie explained
“I told you that was a miracle,” Angie blurted out again.
“Angie, do you remember what the preacher said the other day about how life can bring a downpour of tragedies hard for us to understand. And He can also bring down some drizzles,—close calls. God is with us in either case,” explained Goldie.
“Yeah, I remember,” said Angie
“He reminded us how that we forget God’s daily providential care and only think of those downpours to praise Him for His care.” All of a sudden, the door swung open again with a crash.
“Angie, said her daughter, Lisa, Didn’t you see me slip on the stairs and almost fall backward?
I yelled at you to wait. It’s a miracle that I am still alive!”
Angie and Goldie looked at each other, donning a Cheshire grin. Both chuckled out, “Miracle? Nah! Drizzle!”
