My roommate is a human Barbie doll.
I suppose any roommate would've been an adjustment, but getting along with Holly seems tougher than my classes.
I’m not sure what to do except listen to Mozart and study. Holly doesn’t spend much time studying; she spends most of her time talking to her friends and going out partying.
That’s not what I came to college for.
I’ve decided to pray for her, but it may be a lost cause.
To make things worse, this place seems so strange. I'm from New York City, so I'm used to subways, crowded streets, and neon lights. This place is in the country- and it's really quiet.
I miss home. Sometimes the only thing that keeps me sane is my Empire State Building replica. I keep it in my dresser drawer to remind me of home.
Love, Marla

Dear Diary,
My roommate is a total nerd. She might as well be married to her textbooks.
I know college is all about education, but …. I have my whole life to be serious. College seems totally awesome so far, and there are lots of other girls to hang out with. Sticking my face in books and writing 99-page papers is Nerdsville.
I’ll study eventually.
But that’s not all I came to college for.
I guess I'll pray for Marla. She totally needs it.
My other problem is this place. It's nothing like home. My suburban hometown is full of people who know each other. There are trees, playgrounds, and malls. This place is so "country" I expect a cow to walk in our room.
I've stashed my old pom-poms under my bed. They remind me of home, and they make me smile.
Love, Holly

Dear Diary,
Maybe Holly isn't so bad. I saw her studying the other day, and she asked me for help with Excel, so maybe there's hope for her. I even heard her tell someone she couldn't go out because she had a paper due.
Either my prayers are working, or I'm rubbing off on her.
This place still seems so strange. I'd love a chance to hop on a subway or look at a skyscraper.
I'm still praying for Holly, but I also still stare at my little statue and wish it were a rocket ship.
Love, Marla

Dear Diary,
My roommate may be a nerd, but she's growing on me. I had no clue how to do a spreadsheet, but she explained it to me. And she actually went out to a concert. OK - it was a violin concert, but at least she unglued herself from her books.
Maybe my prayers worked. Or maybe I've shown her there's more to life than studying.
This place is still Squaresville. There's not much to do and the nearest mall is an hour away.
There are lots of nice girls here, but it’s not like home. My pom-poms make me smile, but sometimes they also make me more homesick.

Dear Diary,
It turns out Holly and I actually have some things in common.
Today I saw Holly with some pom-poms. At first, I thought, "how typical", but then she explained about them. Now, I wouldn't want pom-poms, but they're her version of my Empire State Building replica.
So, I showed her the statue and then we had an actual conversation. We found out we both like Greek yogurt; our favorite color is green, and we both have pet cats.
These may not be much, but they're a beginning.
Today, I placed my replica on the nightstand in the center of our room, and she placed her pom-poms there. It's the beginning of our "new" home.
And maybe that's the answer to my prayers.
Love, Marla

Dear Diary,
Today I found out Marla and I are more alike than I'd thought.
Today she saw my pom-poms. I thought she'd make fun of me, but instead, she showed me a little statue of the Empire State Building. I can't see why that's so special, but to her, it spells home the same way my pom-poms do for me.
After that, she and I talked. We even found out we have the same middle name: Sue!
Today we decided to make our room into our "home away from home”. My pom-poms will keep her statue company on the nightstand.
Who knows? Looks like those prayers worked.
Love, Holly
