Tammi’s eyelids lifted heavily. Her head turned towards the beeping noise next to her. The room was dark except for a bright red light blinking on the machine to her left. She realized she was in a hospital bed and pushed the up arrow on the bed rail to raise her upper body. It was all she could do to push the button but she managed to do so long enough to raise her up enough to see what was in front of her. She rolled her head to the right and looked at her arm. It was bandaged and had an IV running through it.
She rolled her head forward to inspect the rest of her body and her surroundings. She was covered in a white blanket with the letters AGH on the edge in blue. It was pulled up to her chest and she didn’t know why but everything in front of her looked wrong. With both hands, she grabbed the rails to pull herself up to get a better look. She sucked in the stale air and with all her energy pulled herself to a sitting position. Now she could see more of what was in front of her. It was then that she noticed what was different. The blanket was flat in front of her. With shaking hands, she grabbed hold of the blanket and nervously pulled it towards her. Inch by inch she pulled it. As the blanket gathered in her lap, she came to the horrible realization that her legs just below mid-thigh were gone. She wanted to cry out or scream but no sound would come from her mouth.
Movement caught her eye and she looked towards the window. It was nighttime but there was a light from the parking deck shining. In the glow of the light she saw a figure of a person. It was a tall person, obviously male by the wide width of the shoulders but why was he outside her window? She watched the shadowy figure pace back and forth with arms crossed. He must have sensed her watching him and turned to peer inside the window. When he did, Tammi could see behind him four enormous wings. They were spread out the full width of the window. She looked for the panic button to call the nurse but saw it laying on the floor. With no legs and wrapped up in tubes and cords, she couldn’t reach it. She became frantic. She looked back up at the window and the figure was gone.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Scratch.
The scratching sound came from a chair in the corner near the window. Someone was in the room with her but she couldn’t see them.
“Help me.” Her voice didn’t sound like her own and it was low and raspy. She barely heard it herself when she mouthed the words.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Scratch.
“Tammi.” It was not a question but just a simple statement from the figure in the corner.
“Who are you?” Her throat hurt to speak.
The figure stood up and from the little sliver of light coming in through window, it was tall. It was the same figure that had been outside her window. His head was almost to the ceiling and she caught a glimpse of his wings touching the floor. As he walked towards her, she could hear his wings scratching against the tile floor.
“Tammi, I have been sent to help you.” He was clearly visible to her now and was standing next to her bed. He picked up the device used to call the nurse and put it on her bed.
“Who are you?” Tammi asked again as the winged creature put his large hand over her own.
His touch was soft and she could feel the warmth from it coursing through her arm and up to her shoulder and into her chest.
“What are you doing?” She wanted to yell but just as she was about to attempt it, the figure’s other hand reached for the jumbled up blanket in front of her. He pulled it down and smoothed it out.
With her attention now on the bed in front of her, she could feel the warmth rushing through torso and down to her hips and legs.
“But,” The warmth disappeared and so did the figure but in front of her under the blanket, she could once again feel and see her legs.
She pushed the panic button.
