While still a teenager, John Newton got involved in the slave trade in the early 18th century. He was one of many young men who sailed to West Africa and bought helpless black African men and women. They crowded them, naked, into ships and took them across the Atlantic. Then they sold them as slaves to plantation owners or anyone else wanting cheap labour.
This slave trade played a large part of increasing the prosperity of much of what would become the south-eastern United States and Caribbean.
John Newton’s early life was filled with some of the most horrible behaviour, cruelty, sexual corruption, and other evil indulgences.
Eventually, during a voyage from the Caribbean to Britain, God stepped into his life. Caught in a violent storm, having terrible fears that the ship would not survive, they eventually reached land.
Not long after that miraculous rescue, John Newton urgently sought and found salvation in Jesus.
And the Lord took him into a wonderful Gospel and hymn-writing ministry for many years.
“That saved a wretch like me!”
