TITLE: Turning the Tables (spoken word) | Previous Challenge Entry

a migrant, homeless, unmarried, mother
{enters stage right} on a donkey
the narrator, in rhyme, recounting her plight
there in the corner, a star shining bright
boys wearing tea towels deliver the lines
of the “No room in the…” innkeepers’ story
and shepherds surrounded by those who are bleating
wear fluffy coats and are looking really quite sheepish
while blonde-haired girls wearing tinsel and halo
furtively waving and mouthing hello to their parents,
smiling and dreaming of presents to come
and the boys and the girls deliver good news to all men
“Hosanna to the son of David, amen!”
This nativity scene we have all seen before
not forgetting the three kings to offset the poor
framed in a stable, no windows, no doorway
there is the manger alone on the floor
and the preacher recites lines, oft tried and tested
that “this was NOT a stable relationship fit for a king”
then the choir stand up, all ready to sing
of once upon a time in royal David’s city
and it is all so pretty…
…so pretty far from the truth of
gentle Jesus meek and mild
God incarnate as a child
lay amongst the cattle lowing
…and a spotless lamb cries for the sins of the world
As He grows in age and grows in stature
He helps his dad the carpenter
making furniture fashioned with chisel and lathe
turning tables and chairs to be used in His dad’s home
yet even then his desire was to be in His Father’s house
…but slowly and insidiously from the dove sellers
there is a silent coup turning God’s house into a den of thieves
but Jesus turned the tables on the temple traders and
all of those who bought and sold
yet the only one who could pay the price
was the Lamb of God, the sacrifice
and a spotless lamb cries for the sins of the world
and the boys and the girls in the courts of the temple cry
“Hosanna to the Son of David”
A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the ground
while others cut branches from trees
and in one long ‘royal’ procession
they hope it’s time for succession
as the crowd cries “Hosanna to the Son of David”
…He enters {stage right} on a donkey
while they all start to sing
He is hailed as a conquering king
yet within a matter of days He is spurned
once again the tables are turned
and He is crucified, nailed to a cross
finally His story is now fully unfurled
…a spotless Lamb dies
for the sins of the world
