“To her pastor. You should see the rock on her finger.”
Katie didn’t care as much about the size of Amy’s, ring, but she did think to herself that she wished her own husband was more spiritual - like a pastor.
“Yes, apparently, they got pretty close on a missionary trip they did together,” her sister continued. Katie thought that sounded perfect.
Until four years later her cousin, Amy, was getting divorced (again) because she caught her husband having an affair.
“He kidnapped you from work for an anniversary trip? with flowers?” Katie asked her friend incredulously. “I can’t even imagine Ted doing something like that. My husband doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body. I’ve even told him a surprise would be nice. Of course it wouldn’t be a ‘surprise’ if I had to ask him for it,” Katie mumbled half to herself. She was green with envy.
But she always saw her friend in church without her husband; lately her children weren’t there either.
On social media, Katie saw handsome men with their two perfect children on glorious vacations. The last vacation her family of seven took was to a campground. Her husband worked so hard, and Katie was very careful with their money - there just never seemed to be enough of it. Sending five kids to a Christian school was very expensive. Not to mention, all the boys were obsessed with baseball, and Ted usually coached at least two teams per season - which a huge time commitment.
One day Katie’s ten year old son came home from his youth group meeting at church.
”They told us God wants us to be men of integrity. What does integrity mean?” he wanted to know. “I googled it, and it says,” he read, “‘it’s the quality of being honest and showing uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles and values.’ I still don’t really get it.”
“A man of integrity would be a man who actually lives out his values,” Katie explained. “His character is good and true - even when no one’s watching.” She continued, “He stands firm in his faith and he’s the same person regardless of his audience or situation. You know?”
”Oh, so you mean he’s like dad,” her son very matter of factly said.
”Yes. I guess that’s what I mean. Yes, your father is definitely a man of integrity,” Katie said as much to her son as to herself.
Then she thanked God for the reminder of how blessed she truly was!
