The birch tree was bounding
In the breeze of October
Its hanging down twigs
Were bouncing around
As if happy with motion
After stillness of summer
And heat of the sun.
So very much better
To be cooler in freedom
Than trapped by hot silence
And gasping for air.
Way down underneath
On the pathway
Through woodland
The walkers went faster
In freedom from summer
Sluggish paces no more
Reluctantly slogging
In sunshine and stillness
And damp heat of summer.
Both birch tree and walkers
Enjoying the newness
Of autumn’s fresh air.
The walkers now feeling
A spring in their steps
Which they’d lost in the summer.
While the birch tree
Fresh moving
Enjoys the new breeze.
All plant life and creatures
When hindered or spoilt
Will welcome the motion
Of life-giving breeze.
Perhaps from the doldrums
Of much of church life
We should cry to our Maker
For the breeze of His Spirit
Refreshing and new.
