“Thanks, Grandma. I wanna’ wear the necklace Mom gave me. Does it look okay with these clothes?”
“It looks perfect.”
Nicole lost her parents in an automobile accident three years ago and has been living with her grandparents. They proved to be a god-send to Nicole, an only child, and they love her deeply.
“What made you want to wear this necklace today?” asked grandma.
“Guess I’m a little melancholy. I was thinkin’ about mom and dad and wishin’ they were here to hear me sing at the concert tonight. Whenever I wear this, she touched the heart locket around her neck, I can feel them close. Mom gave this to me before she died. It’s my favorite piece of jewelry.”
Grandma nodded. “It’s my favorite piece of jewelry too. I gave that to your mom when she was a teenager, and now she has given it to you. I remember your mom wearing it all the time, just as you want to do.”
“Thanks for breakfast Grandma. Gotta’ go. The bus will be comin’ soon and I don’t wanna’ be late for school.” With that, Nicole ran off to grab her backpack then ran to the corner to catch the bus.
Grandma spent the afternoon baking sugar cookies, knowing Nicole would enjoy them after school. Promptly at three o’clock Nicole came running through the back door. “Hi Grandma. Oh wow! Cookies. Thanks for making them Grandma,” She grabbed three as she ran to her room. With a mouthful of cookie she mumbled, “Gotta’ practice a little.”
Grandma always enjoyed hearing Nicole sing. It reminded her of her own daughter, Stacy. She had a beautiful voice, like Nicole. But Stacy’s beautiful music ended the day a drunk hit their car. She tucked those memories away as she concentrated on finishing up dinner before the concert.
“Nicole, dinner is ready,” Grandma called.
“Okay, be down in a minute.”
Once dinner was over, Nicole went to her room to get ready for the evening. “What should I wear,” Nicole pondered. She decided on her navy slacks and pink sweater. She would wear her necklace. It would look pretty with the sweater. As she went to get her necklace she let out a little cry. “Where is it? Where did my necklace go? It’s not here. I know I put it right here.
“GRAAAA-MA!”
“My goodness, what is wrong child?”
“I ca-ca-nn’t find m-m-my necklace,” Nicole sobbed.
“Where did you last have it?” Asked Grandma.
“I d-d-on’t kn-ko-ow,” she continued to cry.
Grandma put her arm around her, pulling her close. “Nicole, when I lose something the first thing I do is pray. Let’s do that now.”
A surprised Nicole looked at her grandma and said, “What? Is God really concerned about my necklace? I can really pray for something like that?”
“Of course. Nicole, go get your Bible, I want you to read something.”
Off Nicole ran to get her Bible.
“Now, open to Mark 11:24. What does it say?”
“I tell you, you can pray for anything..”
“Awesome. Will you pray Grandma?”
“Dear Jesus, help Nicole find her necklace. You know where it is. Lead her to it so she can wear it tonight. Give her faith to believe you hear her prayer. In Jesus name, amen.”
“Now, when did you last have it?”
“Well, I was singing and reading my Bible before getting dressed. I read Mom’s favorite passage. Here, I’ll show you.”
Nicole turned to Psalm 95 and to her surprise, there lay her necklace.
“Now I remember,” laughed Nicole. I took it off just before getting dressed. I asked mom to sing through me, as she is now singing with Jesus, her Rock. It’s exactly where I left it,” stated a relieved Nicole.
Grandma gently placed the necklace around the neck of her granddaughter, kissed her on the forehead, and said, “Come on honey. Let’s thank Jesus for finding your necklace.”
“I’ll pray,” said Nicole. “Jesus, thank you for teaching me something new. That you are concerned about everything in my life and I can pray about anything, even ‘where did I put my necklace’. Love you Jesus.”
“Let’s go, grandma. Now where did I put my music?”
“It’s on the bed, under your Bible,” laughed Grandma.
“Oh, right. My Bible saves the day - twice."
