She started her report to the heroes, “I should have expected that the Star Empire you helped defeat would have technology that they could use to travel in time.”
Diamond, with his usual lack of patience asked, “So were’d those slugs go and how can we stop them?”
Ruth responded, “From what I was able to discern with the computers, they didn’t go back in time. They sent five humans back in time. With Allah’s Fist missing, I suspect I know who they sent.”
Megawatt, who was generally more pragmatic than his friend asked, “Can you figure out when they went and how we can travel back to stop them before they change history?”
Ruth answered, “From the energy readings, it looks like they went back about two thousand years. I can duplicate the energy signature to send some of you back to stop them from changing the timeline.”
As she said that, she was struck by the irony that she and her late husband had traveled from the future to change history themselves.
Diamond shot back, “How many of us can go back?”
Ruth had already done the calculations. “The four women and one guy. The numbers would be equal.”
What she didn’t tell them was that it would take the entire power grid to send them back, and maxing it out twice more to return both groups to the present.
Megawatt made an instant decision. “Diamond, you go back with the ladies. I can stay here and power Ruth’s time machine.”
Ruth nodded, appreciating Megawatt’s ability to find a less dramatic answer to the power situation. She escorted them to the roof, where a spherical craft was hidden by an invisibality cloak, an item from her personal history.
After the strike team had entered the bubble, Megawatt disconnected the power cables from the electrical system and grasped them in his hands. This would be the largest electrical blast he’d ever used.
With a flash of green energy, the sphere vanished into history, following the preset coordinates Ruth had set.
Inside the bubble, the five heroes saw the roof disappear and a desert replace it. The team used their morphing belts to create historical clothing appropiate for the local culture, then stepped out of the bubble. Diamond used his great strength to roll the bubble behind a hill.
Blue Flame said, “There’s a city in the distance. Let’s see if Allah’s Fist is there and work to stop them.”
The five took to the air and quietly landed behind a palatial building. Coldfire asked the group, “Shall we use our telepathic powers to get an idea what’s going on and what our ‘friends’ want to change?”
They all agreed, and quickly discovered that an execution was being disrupted by five strangely garbed figures. Amazing Girl asked the obvious question, “Admitting that saving a prisoner from being killed might be good, how would it change history?”
An instant later, they arrived at a hilltop where three men were being crucified. Most of Allah’s Fist was making short work of the Roman guards, while Lion Lord was using his claws to pry the man in the center loose. Amazing Girl used two giant hands to grab Lion Lord and another member of Allah’s Fist. The three remaining Muslims were easily stopped by the other four heroes. Lion Lord growled, “We are trying to save your Christ from being executed. Let us go!”
Diamond answered for the group, “Sorry, but Jesus has to die to save us from our sins.”
“Besides,” asked Coldfire, “Why do you want to rescue Jesus?”
Moonhunter, struggling in her grip, shouted out the answer. “If there is no dead Jesus, there is no Christianity and no Light Force! We can return to a future where Islam reigns surpreme!”
Unexpectedly, a pain filled voice spoke to the combatants in English. “Diamond, my son, do what you know you must, and take them home.” He continued, “I can see your thoughts, that you’re concerned that this battle might change your future history, but fear not, my Father can fix that. Go home, my good and faithful servants.”
As the Light Force returned home, they reflected that no one would believe that they let Jesus die to preserve history…
