Belinda started to close the door, but Pastor Wallace asked her not to, and in fact opened a connecting door as he called out, “Mike, can you come in for a moment?”
Belinda understood why he didn’t want to be alone in a closed office with her, but the news she needed to share was sensitive. As soon as Mike entered, they all sat.
Belinda began, “Pastor Wallace, I’m here to take you to your son, who’s in the hospital.”
Pastor Wallace looked suspiciously at Belinda. “Why didn’t the hospital call me directly?”
Belinda demurred, disguising her anxiety with indifference. “I’m not sure, but his friend Rex asked me to bring you to him.”
Mike interjected, “Josh, we should pray for Dirk, then you should go with her to see him.”
Pastor Wallace agreed, and the three of them prayed, placing Dirk’s health in God’s hands. As Belinda and Wallace left Blessed Fellowship, Sally called out, “Shall I put Dirk on the prayer update?”
Wallace replied, “Not yet. I’ll let you know after I know more.”
As they stepped into the sunshine, Pastor Wallace asked, “Where’s your car?”
There was a blur of motion beside him and he turned to see Speedster. Pastor Wallace didn’t trust costumed heroes, immediately becoming suspicious. “Was Dirk hurt because of one of your fights?”
Speedster responded, “Not exactly. Hang on. It will be a quick trip to Washington.”
A moment later they stopped beside Walter Reed hospital. Drawing Wallace aside, Speedster handed him a bundle of cloth. Pastor Wallace shook it out, revealing a grey jumpsuit with a black mask, gloves, cape, and boots. “What’s this for?” he asked, anger warring with the shaky feeling from travelling several states in sixty seconds.
Speedster ignored his tone and responded, “Just trust me, sir. You’ll understand when we see Dirk and Rex.”
Pastor Wallace grumbled, but acquiesced, asking her to turn around while he changed. Soon, the disguised minister said, "Done."
Speedster turned, pressed a Bible into his hands and smiled. “The Masked Minister. You’re here to visit a superhero from your hometown.”
He started to respond, but Speedster shushed him and led him to an elevator. Pastor Wallace kept silent, curiosity about why Dirk was in a Washington hospital battling with his loathing of the disguise.
When they got to the right floor, Pastor Wallace was surprised to see military police guarding the hall and one room in particular. “Is that where…” He started, but Speedster was already striding to the door with the guards. Stepping to the officer in charge she said, "I’m back, and I brought his minister as promised.”
Pastor Wallace and Speedster entered the room and shut the door. Pastor Wallace looked at his son on the bed, then the disguised Rex Brand sitting next to him. Rex looked up. Pastor Wallace removed the mask and said, “Can you finally tell me what’s going on?”
Rex looked at his pastor and decided to reveal his secret. He unmasked, setting down his helmet. He pulled back the sheet to show that Dirk was in his Megawatt guise with his cowl pulled away from his face. Rex had had a hard time convincing the doctors to work on Megawatt with his mask on, but they had compromised with Diamond agreeing to unmask his friend when the medical personnel left. Pastor Wallace’s eyes went from his son’s face to a rip on his sleeve where there were two puncture marks.
Diamond started to answer his unasked question, “Me and Dirk were here following She-Snake...” Rex paused.
Pastor Wallace prompted, "I know who she is."
Diamond continued. “She was gonna attack the president, so Megawatt and I came to stop her. Dirk wrestled with her while I got the president to safety. I was just returning when she bit him. I knocked her out and flew Dirk here to be treated for her venom. Then I called Speedster and asked her to bring you.”
Pastor Wallace understood why he had to be disguised. If Dirk’s secret were known, he and his wife would be endangered. He grunted as Diamond replaced the helmet he wore and covered Dirk’s face again. “I still don’t approve, but you boys did save the president, even if you did it in disguise.”
