Topic: ENOUGH (01/07/21)
While it is most likely fictional, there is a story told that when someone asked John D. Rockefeller ‘how much is enough?’ he famously replied, ‘one dollar more.’ Underlying the exchange is the truth that while many lack basic necessities there are always some who have far more than they could ever spend in a lifetime. It is such stark inequities that often drive the desire for more as a means of achieving security and peace. The truth being expressed is that no matter how hard we search for sufficiency in this world, we will never find it.

Recent events have emphasized how even the appearance of a shortage of a necessity can cause people to horde items they fear not being able to acquire when needed. Such irrational fears can often be the cause of the shortages as people acquire far more than they can use in the short term. The longing for comfort from worldly goods is most likely a response to the lack all of us feel in being separated from our creator. The moment that Adam and Eve were banished from the garden they immediately experienced lack. From that time on all of us have felt need and to some degree or another we search in vain to acquire enough of whatever we believe will satisfy.

Jesus spoke directly to the matter. He emphasized that our only sufficiency in this life is to be about the Father’s business. Seeking God’s kingdom and desiring to bring it about is the only way of life that brings the security and peace that all of us so deeply desire. The promise is that as we focus on God’s priorities, He will provide our basic necessities. Our enough is a product of choosing His priorities. Being rich in this world’s goods is a path that often leads to wrong priorities and foolish choices. Only by being rich in God can we have what we need in this life as well as the promise of so much more in the one to come.

You said it well. Sometimes we really don't know what we're looking for. Finding Jesus can be an inexplicable joy after years of hardship & searching.
