Brad gave a sigh of relief as he staggered away from Joe’s Bar and Grill. Had he finally arrived at victory? So many battles he had lost. He’d made so many promises to his wife, Loretta. He’d renewed his commitment to the Lord time and again. "Words come cheap." He mused. But this time was different. Now he needed to put a plan into action.
No way was he going to tell Loretta. He’d made her enough promises. He remembered the Promise Keeper meetings he had attended. Somehow the commitment had melted away.
He was embarrassed as he thought about the things he saw on the internet. He wouldn’t tell Loretta about that right away. After he had proved himself, he would open up his heart and confess. It was more important to show her, than to once again speak words that she would question.
Where to begin. He would arrange a weekend get-away, with a little help from Loretta’s mom. Just the two of them. It would be a surprise. Brad frowned. They tended to live separate lives. That’s why he would enlist some help. Her mother knew more about her activities than he did! Also, she would be happy to have the grandkids for the weekend.
He would sweep Loretta off her feet and give her the time of her life. After that maybe the rest would not be as difficult as he envisioned.
He needed to sit down with her and discuss finances. Ouch! How would he handle this? He would listen rather than talk. Find out just what her desires and priorities were. They had two separate checking accounts. Not a huge problem, but lack of a budget and communication were. He was determined it would no longer be ‘his’ money and ‘her’ money.
Talk about a challenge. For years they spent ‘their’ money anyway they please. Of course, they worked out paying for the mortgage and household expenses. Otherwise, it was chaos. They often fought about whose car they would go to church in. Neither wanted their gas money spent on joint use. But from now on he would take his car. That should speak volumes to her
Then, he would start dating her again. Treating her like she was the most important thing in his life, which she really was. He just needed to show her, instead of talk about it. He needed to let her know that she was number one.
He stopped and wept bitter tears. Yes, he did love Loretta, but the cost was too great. Brad stumbled back and sat down at Joe’s.
On a Monday morning one month later, Brad realized that no weekend get-away had been planned and yesterday they had fussed about which car to take to church. Nothing had changed. He wondered why.
