I need to learn to keep my lips zipped. I have a bad habit of gushing on The Captains works prior to his arrival. For instance, recently my wife and I had a “date night”. These occasions are few and far between with the kids and all, so I really wanted to do things right. Being the romantic I am, I decided to go all out and clean the car for a stunning presentation – that would surely impress. So, it went on my “to do” list for the day. But it’s not a very well-kept secret that I find washing and vacuuming the car to be one of the most mundane chores that happens to fall into my realm of responsibility. And wouldn’t you know it, Captain Can-do was a no show and I was embarrassed, indeed, as I opened the door to… well, a less than pristine display. And my “date night” outfit? Well, I had intended on stopping by the store on the way home from work all week but oh my gosh, how I detest shopping! If I can still squeeze into it, I will. I guess my future superhero self can update the wardrobe - later. So, my all-around presentation wasn’t as stellar as I had planned, but then again, my wife has a weak heart and I wouldn’t want to deliver too big of a shock to her in one night.
Now my wife, she knows of The Captains existence but has yet to uncover the “Can-do” signal I have hidden away in the shed…She hasn’t stepped within fifty feet of that thing since I told her about the family of mice that have moved in…hehehe. But I know that she knows because she keeps dropping hints about things as if Cap has bugged the walls or something.
“We should really do something about that fence in the back yard before it falls down completely. Should we get some estimates?” Blah, blah, blah.
“No, I’ve got this hon…it’s on the list. I’ve just got to get to the store to pick up the materials. We can save a lot of money by fixing it ourselves, it’s just going to take a little time. “
No, it doesn’t work like that. Captain Can-Do shows up when he is needed and usually not a minute too soon. In a pinch; when it’s absolutely imperative, all I have to do is just shine the “Can-Do” signal in the sky over my home and he will come - usually.
This week, however, I had a very important test scheduled. Never mind that it has been on the calendar for the last three months. I actually did study on my own – some, but this stuff for work is just so tedious! If I ever needed my future superhero self to come to my rescue, I needed him for this. But guess who never showed up to save the day?
First, the date night fiasco and then a failed test at work. I’m ready to have it out with this guy, if I can ever catch up with him. In fact, it may be time to put The Cap on ice for a while. After all, I don’t want anyone to get the impression that I’m lazy. Plus, he probably could use a rest as he isn’t getting any younger. He doesn’t have to worry though, no matter how hard I try to get things done in the here and now, I will always have a standing order for his services on Christmas Eve.
