Lady Freeze was doing her thing, robbing a bank, but the teen heroes were dealing with her when I arrived. I saw three of the teenagers, the ones who were called Coldfire, Megawatt, and Diamond, trying to deal with Lady Freeze in a typical blunt instrument fashion, firing energy beams, or in Diamond’s case, punching away.
I had learned something about their powers when I did a feature piece on them. So I was able to offer advice. “Coldfire, I know this sounds weird, but use your cold blasts on her. She needs heat.”
Megawatt stopped firing lightning bolts at Freeze to look at me in puzzlement, asking, “Who are you, lady?”
I answered him while trying to hold Lady Freeze so Coldfire could have an easy target, should she take my advice. “Name’s Speedster, kid. She’s one of my arch enemies, and I know her weakness.”
I saw him and Diamond bristle when I called him ‘kid’, not the most diplomatic utterance I suppose. Coldfire kept on using her heat powers on Lady Freeze, ignoring the conversation between me and her teammates. The heat made her stronger, and eventually she was able to bust loose of my hold and frost the two male heroes.
In an instant Coldfire turned, blond hair whipping around her head as she melted her electrical teammate. Diamond just flexed, somehow, while covered in ice, and shattered the frost on his body.
“That was chilly.” Diamond grunted, “Hey, Coldfire, try what the guest heroine suggested. Can’t be much worse than what we’s doing.”
Finally, after I got another grip on Lady Freeze, I felt a blast of cold air surround her, and to a lesser degree me.
Lady Freeze moved extremely slowly, even by normal human speed standards, and Coldfire, her voice high, marveled, “It’s working, but why? She has cold powers, so why is freezing her stopping her?”
Before I could answer, a rarity for me, Megawatt answered his teammate’s question, apparently having figured it out on his own. “Like a refrigerator, she needs energy to produce cold. Am I right, ‘old woman’?”
I guessed I deserved that jab after calling him kid, so I swallowed my pride and simply responded, “Yes.”
I spoke to him as an equal as I asked, “Mind if I take her home to my city?” I wasn’t sure River Edge had facilities to hold superpowered baddies like her.
“No need,” responded Megawatt. “Our police force has had to learn to handle super powered criminals.”
As the local law came in to take Lady Freeze away, Megawatt warned, “Keep her cold, guys!”
I turned towards the younger heroes and asked, with a broad grin, “Anyone up for ice cream? My treat.”
Coldfire seemed to answer for the group. “After dealing with that villain? Really?”
I said to them, “I need a lot of calories, so I often get something to eat after a battle.”
Diamond asked, “Why don’t we go to a Hyper-Burger instead. They’ll have enough food for even your appetite.”
I hadn’t thought of that, not knowing what fast food chains were local. I sped away and used Belinda’s ATM card to get some cash. In a few moments we were in line at Hyper-Burger, and soon we ordered a Triple combo for me and Diamond, who deserved it, I thought, after advising his colleague to take my advice. Coldfire just ordered a salad, and Megawatt got a large single combo. As we sat in the outside seating area, munching on our food, we overheard a call from a passing police car. A group called Allah’s Fist was wreaking havoc at a local Christian community center. Megawatt touched his belt and called out, “Light Force, assemble at Westside Christian Center.” He glanced in my direction and asked, “Want to join us?”
I nodded my head and crammed the last of my combo meal in to my mouth and chewed at high speed. In an instant, I was on my feet and ready to go. “Lead the way, my super friends.”
