‘Oh, no!’ Christine inwardly responded as she shifted restlessly in her wheelchair. ‘Dad and I spent so much time putting the video presentation together, it just has to work! People need to see how much I need a motorized wheelchair.’
At fourteen she had been knocked off her bike by a drunk driver on her way to school. She spent the next nine months in the Royal Children’s Hospital, in Melbourne. Her parents drove 100 km each day from their home in the country to support her. After intense rehabilitation she was still paralyzed from the waist down with limited movement in her arms, if she was to go anywhere she had to depended on others to push her around.
Christine had been home for three months now and was feeling extremely isolated. A motorized wheelchair would allow her to go out on her own and spend time with her friends. It would mean freedom and independence.
During the first part of the evening the audience had been entertained by the Gospel Blue Grass Band, ‘Redeemed Pickers.’ It was now after interval, time for Christine’s father to tell the audience about her need. The video was to be the introduction. With the help of old footage from home movies it showed her life from a baby, progressing through childhood, the devastating accident and the long and painful rehabilitation. Three thousand dollars needed to be raised if Christine was to gain her independence.
As the minutes ticked by, Christine became more anxious. ‘Mum, what if we don’t raise enough money?’
‘It’s ok darling, let’s just trust God. He knows your need, he also knows that we have spent all we have on hospital and other medical issues. God is now our only provider and we just have to trust him.’
‘Is there a child in the house?’ The call came again. If restarting the computer does not work, it is said to call a child. Children are more tech savvy than the average adult these days.
David’s mother nudged him. At nine he was a bit of a computer whiz. ‘David, off you go, you know you might be able to help.’ David jumped up and ran towards the media console.
‘What’s the problem?’ he asked Bill who looked exasperated and embarrassed. So far everything he tried seemed to make the problem worse. David listened intently, analyzed the problem in his mind, reached over and pushed a few buttons, and….hey presto….the video started.
David turned to Bill and with a huge smile on his face declared, ‘Easy! You just need to know what to do!’
Christine was elated, the presentation touched people's hearts and they generously donated over $4,000, enough extra to by a motorized lift to help her get in and out of bed.
‘Thank you God,’ she whispered, ‘It is true what the Bible says, My God does supply my every need.’
