“Get the doctor, urgent! When this person defrosts from his cryogenics chamber, we will need his help.”
This has been one stressful day. Whoever thought my career would have brought me a new faith?
Where do I start? First, sit down you – will need to. You will probably think me insane, but here we go.
Yesterday, one of our cryogenics centres reported an anomaly. When I arrived, a pod was nearly fully depressurised. What tumbled out changed my life for ever.
Science is our God: what I mean by God is the foundation of our civilization. For there is no God. Science killed it many, many years ago. In this world, the only place you might hear about God is in the Museum of the Heresies. I visited once with a school trip and like all other twelve year olds was shown what 'God' did to this world. He caused wars, famine, plagues. God nearly destroyed the world . On the wall is a passage that states God turned the world's water to blood, God destroyed the world’s food supply by killing the livestock and then destroyed families by taking the first born.
As if that was not damning enough, God then tried to flood the world. But one very clever family outwitted God by building a massive boat and out-sailed God. This family used primitive science to overcome hardship.
So you can see and surely understand why we have been shown that God is false. Because God destroyed all the animals we used to eat, we now get a daily ration of nutrients in the form of paste supplied at Juice M. Donalds, the worldwide provider of delicious food.
Sorry, let me get back on topic. I was just getting hungry again.
What emerged out of the cryo was a bearded man. No one in this country has facial hair as it is unclean and distasteful to decent people. This man's face hair actually suited; it was a positive extension of himself.
Wow! When this stranger spoke, his authority was none like any I have ever heard before. His first question, was where am I? When I explained that this was Cryo centre 127, thirty-four miles from Boston. He seemed puzzled. The last thing he remembered was being trapped in an avalanche. As his body started to freeze, he prayed that he would meet his maker soon. This made me laugh. Such an outdated form of speech! I would have to show him the error of his ways later.
As I explained to him, his body was found four weeks ago and placed in a cryo tube so we could study it. Firstly we had to ensure he had no illnesses that could endanger us, then slowly we started to heat his body. Unfortunately you defrosted too soon. We had not been able to implant into his mind all he would need to be able to live in present times. We were afraid the shock might be too much for him. I wanted to ease his transition by removing painful memories.
He smiled at me and gave me a piercing look that froze me more that this man had been. “Jesus Christ is my God and as a follower of God, I had hoped that when I had died I would have gone to Heaven. But God must have had a higher purpose for my life. I do not know what it is, but I trust that he knows best.”
All this talking about God was scaring me. Why would any sane person trust in God? As he spoke to me, he showed me the error of the Museum of the Heresies. He showed that what they talked about was God’s judgment of a wicked country and on a corrupt, unrepentant world. Furthermore, he told me about this Christ who died for my sins and wanted me to believe in him. This man from previous time showed me that time was permitted by God and we had to account for it. He showed me that in his day, giant corporations were destroying the world by greed, all for profit.
He further showed me why we need God in our lives; science was not the answer.
I feel worried for this man; how will he cope in this godless world?
This man… What if he had not been defrosted on my shift?
