Clad in a paper-thin gown, Rachel waited on the examination table. “Is anyone with you?” the nurse had asked. She was alone, just as she had been since the first test showed a positive. Rachel knew the next step, an ultrasound to make her fully aware of the living being inside of her. She didn’t think it would change anything. Family members and friends were always showing off those grainy pictures of alien-like babies. Rachel thought they all looked the same and this one would look no different.
Rachel never imagined that she would be in this situation. Really, who ever does? She knew John would be scared but still remained hopeful that he would come around. Three months later, hope was running out. Seeking help from her family was out of the question. She was on her own. The only thing worse would be Rachel on her own, with a baby.
The coolness of the gel took Rachel’s breath. The tickling of the probe made her squirm. Suddenly an image appeared. Rachel watched the tiny legs kick and thought the scene looked identical to a video she watched earlier. She was touched but not enough to change her mind. This was a time for practical reasoning and Rachel’s told her that abortion was best for everyone.
Then she heard it. The sound was much like a horse galloping through the wind. Her baby’s heartbeat pierced the very depths of her soul. “Turn it up,” she pleaded.
She was mesmerized by the sound of life radiating from her body. Weeks had been spent preparing for this day. The walls built around Rachel’s heart had blocked out the images. She never considered that God would speak to her through a tiny heartbeat.
Suddenly Rachel wanted nothing more than to run from the clinic and never look back. Yet she couldn’t get enough of the sound of her baby’s heart. It was a sweet melody written by God.
Finally Rachel left the clinic declining further treatment. She didn’t know the logistics of the months and years to come, but she was eager to start the journey with her baby. The first day of the rest of their lives was waiting.
