Jesus had a childhood like mine. He sat in the workshop and breathed in the fresh smell of planed wood, like I did. He wondered at the smooth feel of shavings, delighted in their flexibility, marvelled at their patterning, like I did. He, like me, felt the softness of sawdust, smelt the oil sharpening the plane blade, inhaled the smell of wood glue cooking. And he learned, as I did, what tool did what; which one smoothed, which one cut, which bored holes, which carved. He experienced, like me, the beauty and variety of wood – the rich dark red of mahogany, the soft gold of pine, the pale almost shiny texture of beech wood. He saw the love with which his father worked the wood, as I did as I watched my dad. Daily he used the articles he had watched his father make with such care and patience. Did he, like me, sleep in a bed hand carved with love? Did he, too, use bowls his father had fashioned? Did he learn to love again as a child, the wood he made with love at the time of creation, by seeing his human father’s joy in it, as I watched mine and knew I shared the love he had? Jesus had a childhood like mine – for him sitting in the workshop, watching his father’s strong hands shaping a block of wood into a thing of beauty and usefulness, was a place of peace and contentment. I knew that joy too. Thank you, Lord, and thank you, Dad, for this shared experience.
