Topic: fathers (06/06/05)
The concept of fatherhood is becoming more and more foreign as boys and girls are growing up in households where the father is either absent, negligent or abusive. Because a respectable role model is so rare these days, it is even harder to understand God the Father and appreciate His qualities. It is more common to associate painful memories with the word “father” and unfortunately, people project these memories onto God and translate their understanding of God into a concept they would rather not deal with, ultimately denying the Only One who wants to truly shower His love, faithfulness and blessings upon them. However, God’s Word accurately and infinitely describes His attributes and the Scriptures are fully trustworthy:

He remembers you
Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! (Isaiah 49:15)

See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. (Isaiah 49:16)

He is faithful and loving
The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made. The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. (Psalm 145:13b-16)

He does not go back on His word
Your promises have been thoroughly tested… (Psalm 119:140)

“You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.” (Joshua 23:14)

He protects you and is always by your side
The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

He is the Ultimate Provider
As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to our God, till he shows us his mercy. (Psalm 123:2)

You gave me life and showed me kindness, and in your providence watched over my spirit. (Job 10:12)

He chose you
“…I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you: do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:9b-10)

The last scripture is a bonus. In addition to the endless list of father-like qualities, there is one slightly special difference between an earthly father and our Father: God chose you. You did not “just happen.” God our Father has a specific plan for each of us, and the Design he has for our lives is glorious if we submit to Him, trust Him and give Him the respect He deserves as our Father in Heaven.

A very accurate commentary on our modern world. It's a shame too many men are failing in the role God has made for them.

You have made an honest assessment of the failure of many fathers today. However, your scripture verses show us that the Lord, our heavenly Father is there to fill our needs, if we only put our trust in Him.
