None had assuaged him the way Marie could. Their concerto commenced when he first came to live with her four winters ago. Thus began the happiest time of his life. They passed their evenings together, sometimes with jazz or blues, often with a hymn. Marie taught him all the old hymns. His favorite was “In the Garden.”
Tonight, strains from the “Moonlight Sonata” resonated within, soothing his soul as her fingers caressed him. The amber glow from a single bulb cast their dancing shadow on a listening wall. Their evening, however, began on a much different tone.
The evening’s decline started with Joey. Pugnacious Joey, who last week, came with peanut butter on his chin and fingers. The week before he had a cold and sneezed without covering his nose. When Joey was present, the music consisted of much banging and gnashing of chords. Why Marie continued to allow Joey to play with them, he’d never know. And each week a sigh of relief reverberated when Joey finished.
With Joey’s departure, harmony once again returned to the room. He and Marie performed as one solitary figure while she played the second movement from the Beethoven classic. As the melody crescendoed, a dissonant shudder resulted when he recalled Joey’s visit. Marie cast him a perplexed look and paused only long enough to pick up the money Joey left for his piano lesson. Then she innocently tickled his ivories as she wiped a small smudge of peanut butter from his name. His name was Steinway. He proudly displayed it. People often said he was grand.
