Three of them were horsing around in Mike's hot tub. Now, you must know these guys are not stringbean basketball players. Every one of them is built more like a football linebacker.
As they whooped with glee, jumping up and down in the water, they suddenly erupted like one gigantic Beluga whale, over the side into the swimming pool, heads first. That would have been fine, except that the hand of one little girl rested on her dad's shoulder. As he went up and over, she flew right along with the momentum.
If nobody else noticed, I saw what happened. But I'm no swimmer.
"Amber's in the deep water!" I screamed from my stance on the patio-deck.
As the panic rose up my throat, and I wondered if anyone had heard my cries, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye. Twelve-year-old Bobby dived gracefully into the heart of the pool, emerging quickly with his sputtering cousin.
"Oh, thank God," I wrapped Amber in a big towel, folding her in my arms for warmth and comfort. The five year old must have had quite a shock, but this little drama queen played it to the nth degree. She shivered, more emphatically than I thought the situation required. But, I went along with the act. She was safe, and that was all that mattered.
"Thank God Bobby saved you," I told her, reminding her to thank him, as well.
Later that evening, while we watched some family videos, scenes from previous guests in the swimming pool rose on the screen. Amber misunderstood, thinking somehow we had recorded the events of this day.
"Show me where I drownded!" She was suddenly all excited to relive her big adventure.
"You little monkey!" I grabbed her in a big bear hug. "You didn't drown! Remember, Bobby rescued you. He'll always be your very own real-life hero!"
Just for the record, I see a mini-sermon in this account. Although I was ill-equipped to save the child in the deep water, I was alert, watching for danger, and I could cry out for help. This rather matches our job as Christians. In prayer, we cry to God, the only One who is able to rescue the perishing. And, thanks be to God, He has His real-life hero Lifeguard, Jesus, always on duty.
