“Hey, guys, don’t forget your cousins are going to be here in less than an hour,” Trish called from the kitchen.
Trish’s sister and her young little family arrived already dressed in their swimwear.
“I guess I know where we’re going,” Trish laughed. “OK, boys. Run! Get your swimsuits on. We’re going to the beach!”
The boys carefully put their binders away, and ran upstairs to get dressed.
“Line up!” Trish told them on the driveway. “You all need sunblock.”
The exasperated sighs came in unison.
“Why do we always need sunblock?” they grumbled.
“So you don’t get sunburned, goofballs!” their aunt told them.
“Just like your baseball cards need to be protected from fading, the sunblock protects your skin from burning,” Trish added. She smiled - pleased with herself for coming up with an analogy that actually resonated with them.
Once they were home, and at least most of the sand was showered off of their bodies, Trish fed her three boys a healthy dinner. She had them take their multivitamin and brush their teeth before tucking them into their warm beds to get the recommended eight hours of sleep. Always taking care of her precious babies.
After all bedtime stories were read and lights turned out, Trish collapsed onto the couch. She made the mistake of turning on the nightly news. There was so much ugliness going on in the world. It was depressing.
With a heavy heart, Trish went to check on each boy before going to bed herself. She was struck by their beautiful innocent faces. She never imagined that she could love this deeply. Her heart physically clinched.
“How am I going to preserve that, Lord?” she worried half out loud. She knew it was only a matter of time before their world of baseball cards and cousins was overshadowed by a more complex, at times unGodly, world.
Trish climbed into her bed, quieted her brain and began pouring out her worries to God.
“These boys are my gift to you,” God whispered to her. “Your job is to provide for them, love them, and point them toward Me. I know how precious they are to you, but they are even more precious to Me. I formed them in your womb and have numbered every hair on their heads.”
The most peaceful sleep fell over Trish. She would continue to give her sons multivitamins and apply sunblock to their wriggly bodies, but she didn’t need to worry about them being exposed to the sin of this world. God would use every situation they encountered as they grew, and how freeing it was to know that He loved her precious babies even more than she did!
