“GRANDPA!”
Sara Jane runs into the kitchen, throws a hug on me and promptly removes her socks and shoes, leaving them in the middle of the floor.
“Grandpa, let’s go play!”
Off we go.
I haven’t even said hello to my daughter yet. She’s still making her way into the house.
We head to the family room where the toys are currently organized and tucked away. That changes in a second.
“Let’s play with Thomas Train!”
The wooden train set starts to fill up the floor. We’re building an impressive track configuration this time.
“Grandpa, I want Buzz.”
I stand up to get the stuffed yellow jacket that sits on the shelf. I bump my leg on the coffee table and say,
“Ouch!”
“Are you okay, Grandpa?”
“I bumped my leg.”
Sara Jane jumps up and gets her doctor’s bag and comes to render aid. Soon the blood pressure cuff, thermometer and syringes are all scattered about.
Then comes the beach ball, the Little People sets and the indoor snowball fight. Snowballs fly everywhere while she gleefully chants,
“I’m pelting my grandpa!”
Toys are literally everywhere. Then she decides I’m a toy and proceeds to climb on me like a jungle gym.
Inevitably, the nicely folded blankets that sit on the chairs find their way into the “I’m a burrito!” game and are tossed around too.
We play for an hour or two and then it’s time for my little playmate to go home. I carry her out to her car and get my goodbye hug.
Back inside the house there’s a lot to do. I start picking up. Well, we start picking up. Nonna was part of the playdate too.
With some effort the house is tidy again. No shoes in the middle of the floor. No trains and other toys strewn about. The blankets are folded, and all the snowballs are accounted for.
Nonna and I collapse into our chairs and sigh.
“Sara Jane sure was busy today.”
“Yes, she was.”
“It’s quiet now.”
“Yes, it is.”
Then we talk about how much fun we had and how special our little granddaughter is. She’s our “precious little blessing” we always say. We scheme a plan for our next playdate, and we reminisce about the days when our children were young.
I recently heard a prominent celebrity say that remaining childless was a superior choice. In her words,
“You always get to do what you want.”
Now, I have no problem with those who decide that parenting is not for them. It’s definitely not for everyone. But I also see it from both sides. I’ve had all the years of effort and investment and now I have an empty nest.
And with that perspective, I can honestly say this. Throughout 34 years of parenting, and grandparenting now, I have absolutely done what I wanted to do. From the very moment I became a dad, I’ve never thought anything else. Children are a blessing from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). Grandchildren are a crown of the aged (Proverbs 17:6). Precious, blessings indeed.
Let’s go play!
