Moses walked over to where God was dwelling, laid his staff on the ground, and knelt before the Lord. “I am all yours, my Lord,” Moses whispered. “What do you wish to talk about?”
Moses and his Lord had many heartfelt conversations over the years. Today would be no different - or would it?
Moses had just witnessed God providing meat and quail for his rabble of Israelites. Of course, they received this scrumptious meal from God because of their complaining.
“Oh, if only we had meat to eat like we did in Egypt. And cucumbers, melons, leeks…yum.”
Moses was so tired of hearing them complain about one thing or another. Moses went to God and asked “Why have you given ME this unthankful group of people? What have I done to deserve them? Where am I to get meat for them to eat? I can’t do this anymore.”
Not only were the people complaining about the food they had to eat, now his brother Aaron and sister Miriam were also complaining about his choice of a wife.
Of all things!
Wasn’t choosing a wife up to Moses. But because she was a Cushite and not an Israelite, they found fault with her. They began complaining because they felt Moses found more favor with God than they did. They complained “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?”
God heard their complaining.
To God, Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth. (12:3)
God was mad! God was pissed. God called the three of them to come stand before him.
Oh-Oh. This doesn’t sound good for them. One NEVER wants to get God mad at you.
As the three stood before God he said, “Listen. Moses is my special servant. He is faithful, kind, gentle and I have chosen him to be the leader of Israel, which includes the two of you - Miriam and Aaron. Why are you complaining against him? What has he done to deserve this? You are to be a testimony to the rest of my children and look at you. Fighting among you. Wanting to be first. Wanting to be the leader. Wanting what I haven’t given to you. Well, now I will give you something. I will give you my punishment for speaking against my servant.”
With a snap from God’s fingers, Miriam became leprous.
She stood there dumbfounded. “Why punish just me,” she cried. “Oh God, take this away.”
But God didn’t.
Aaron stepped in and said to Moses, “Please do something. Don’t let her be punished because we have foolishly sinned. Please Moses, you have a special relationship with God. Please do something.”
Meekly, Moses approached God and cried to him, “O God, please heal her - please.”
God did, but not until she spent seven days outside the camp suffering with her leprosy.
After seven days, she returned to the camp and once again, Moses became the respected leader of them all.
With Miriam safely returned to camp, they could continue the journey God had for them.
